  • I hate to go to or from foreign airports those have no rail transportation
  • It is simply because MRT or subway has clear station names, on time, and relatively cheap compared to other kinds of land transportation
  • When I visited Taipei for the first time in 2013, I took expensive taxi from and to the airport
  • The ticket price is 160 Taiwanese dollars NTD or about 5.60 dollars, the same price for both express or commuter trains
  • Although there are also buses and taxis, I prefer to take the MRT as it is more convenient

I hate to go to or from foreign airports those have no rail transportation. It is simply because MRT or subway has clear station names, on time, and relatively cheap compared to other kinds of land transportation. When I visited Taipei for the first time in 2013, I took expensive taxi from and to the airport. Fortunately Taipei has now airport MRT.

It starts from Taipei Main Station to Taipei Taoyuan International Airport. By following the clear signpost, you will get to the Airport MRT Taipei Main Station. I walked over 15 minutes from Taipei Main Station. At this point, you have two alternatives, the quickest or the cheapest way to get to the airport.

At Airport MRT Taipei Main Station there are two trains to choose from, namely the express and commuter trains. The former takes you only 39 minutes to the airport while the later 52 minutes. Many passengers choose the express one as it is faster and costs you no more expensive than the commuter train. The ticket price is 160 Taiwanese dollars NTD or about 5.60 dollars, the same price for both express or commuter trains.

But if time does not matter to you, then you can take my advice. I could cut down the ticket price to only 130 NTD. Here was my experience. First take commuter instead of express train and alight at Taishan Guihe station, and tap out as if you will terminate the journey here. Please note that express trains do not make a stop at Taishan Guihe. The ticket price for this leg is only 50 NTD. At this very station, you tap in again to continue your journey and alight at the next second stop, the name of this station is Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. Do not tap out here. Instead make a transfer to the express train to make the journey a bit faster. Please note that both express and commuter trains stop at this station. Continue taking this train until it stops at Taipei Taoyuan International Airport. The ticket price for this leg is 80 NTD. And I saved 30 NTD.

  • Taipei Taoyuan Airport MRT, Taiwan
  • The lobby of Taipei Main Station. A very tidy, nice, and airport look station. It serves four functions in one, namely intercity, high speed rail, subway, and airport MRT station. As a matter of fact, Airport MRT station is not at this very same location but accessible on foot from here.

  • Taipei Taoyuan Airport MRT, Taiwan
  • Airport MRT signpost. Although it is said that Taipei Main Station accommodates Airport MRT, the Airport MRT station itself is a bit far from the Main Station. You need to follow this signpost and walk around 20 minutes to get to the Airport MRT station.

  • Taipei Taoyuan Airport MRT, Taiwan
  • Departure/Arrival monitor. The Airport MRT trains are equipped with a monitor screening the departure and arrival information along the journey. This helps the passengers with updated information.

  • Taipei Taoyuan Airport MRT, Taiwan
  • Taishan Guihe Station. This is the station where I did tapping out and tapping in again to get my 30 Taiwanese dollars discount.

  • Taipei Taoyuan Airport MRT, Taiwan
  • Inside the express train. Although the ticket price is the same for the express as well as commuter trains, the interior between the two types of train is different. Whilst passengers sit sideways in plastic benches in the commuter train, they sit facing forward or backward in cushioned seats in the express trains.

Modern airports are well connected to the city by railroads to ease passengers to get to or from the airport on time. Taipei Taoyuan International airport has a good railroad system connecting it with Taipei Main Station, from where you can continue using subways to any part of the city. Although there are also buses and taxis, I prefer to take the MRT as it is more convenient. By breaking your journey for about 30 minutes at Taishan Guihe, you will save 18.75% for the ticket price.
