  • I love writing about places in Saint-Petersburg
  • However, there's lots of amazing places the citizens know about and you can find a ton of information about them on Russian websites, but there is nothing written about them in English, which, in my opinion, should be fixed
  • Because it's not the same as all these movie theaters that show all the same feature films
  • Plus here you can see the short films, like 5 best Italian short films of 2017 or a range of the best short films that were shown at the Cannes Film Festival
  • I do not take pictures of actual movie seances and different performances, mainly because it's usually illegal and just disrespectful, but I did take pictures of the big screening room (all the pictures throughout this review, except for the first one, were taken in the big screening room) and I can't get over how gorgeous it is

I love writing about places in Saint-Petersburg. However, there’s lots of amazing places the citizens know about and you can find a ton of information about them on Russian websites, but there is nothing written about them in English, which, in my opinion, should be fixed. So today I want to talk about the place that has been in Saint-Petersburg for over 100 years and it is one of the oldest movie theaters in Russia and it goes by the name “Rodina”.

  • Rodina is a place everyone, who’s lived in this city for some time knows. It isn’t big, if you compare it to the modern movie theaters, and it only has 3 viewing rooms, but back in the day it was considered huge. But why do I bother talking about some old cinema, when there’s a cinema in every single village now? Because it’s not the same as all these movie theaters that show all the same feature films. They don’t go for just the commercial Hollywood movies and the blockbusters, they broadcast lots of good movies, including some not-so-famous-but-really-great French, German, Dutch etc. films that are not usually shown in the movie theaters. Plus here you can see the short films, like “5 best Italian short films of 2017″ or a range of the best short films that were shown at the Cannes Film Festival.

  • Rodina is really an exceptional place. First of all, they believe that there is no way to translate the movie without it losing its gist in some way, so they do broadcast most of the movies in their original language. Second of all, they don’t go after modern movie trends and prefer to stick to the old ones, for instance, they have silent film seances with live music, which is quite rare nowadays. They also host movie festivals and mpvie nights, like “Quentin Tarantino movie night” or “The Harry Potter movie nights”, which are very exciting events for any cinema lover.

  • The cinema itsef looks like an old theater with its high ceilings, stucco on the walls, balcony and mezzanine. The design of the cinema makes you feel like you’ve come to an art gallery, but you have to remember that it was opened in 1914 and the idea and the purpose of the cinema has changed somewhat since then. You would think that ticket prices here would be higher than usual, but they are actually quite cheap. All the tickets on Monday are 150 rubles (about $2) and 200-300 rubles on the other days of the week.

  • This cinema doesn’t have a usual snack bar or a place, where you can refill your coke, but instead it has a cafe that is typical for the big Russian theaters. You can’t get popcorn or ice-cream in here, but you can get a glass of champagne and a caviar sandwich, which doesn’t sound like a nice movie snack, but it is something that wealthy Russians would get at the opera house. However, if you really need something to munch on, while watching a movie, there are vending machines by the ticket office and a grocery store around the corner.

I really think that every single cinema lover, who comes to Saint-Petersburg, should come and visit this place. I truly love it and I’m sure everyone else will love it too.
