No. 105, Gaotie Road, Zuoying District, Kaohsiung
  • For a shorter distance, like for example to Tainan, it is better to use a local train that costs you 56 New Taiwan Dollars (2 dollars) for a 30 minutes journey from Xin Zuoying station
  • For this, you may need another machine that can change your banknotes to 50 dollar coins, this machine is available around there
  • The later is very simple, so everyone can use it
  • For a longer distance, such as to Taichung or Taipei, I suggest you to use the HSR
  • I purchased local train tickets for Tainan and be informed that the line color is blue

In Kaohsiung there are two rail stations with similar names. They are Zuoying and Xin Zuoying. The former accommodates all but high speed train. The later accommodates all types of train, it is, therefore, a very important station in Kaohsiung and most tourists arrive at or depart from this place. But do not be confused with the name of a subway station whose building is connected to this rail station. The subway station name is Zuoying HSR. HSR stands for high speed rail. Also do not be confused because this rail station does not bear the name of the city, Kaohsiung. There is actually Kaohsiung Main Station, but it refers to another station located in the city center.

For a shorter distance, like for example to Tainan, it is better to use a local train that costs you 56 New Taiwan Dollars (2 dollars) for a 30 minutes journey from Xin Zuoying station. Tickets can only be purchased in the ticket window or from a ticketing machine located in the north side of the station. No reserved seats for this train type. The machine provides two language options, Chinese and English, but accepts only coins for payment. For this, you may need another machine that can change your banknotes to 50 dollar coins, this machine is available around there. The later is very simple, so everyone can use it.

For a longer distance, such as to Taichung or Taipei, I suggest you to use the HSR. This can shorten the travel duration to only a half compared to local trains. Although the tickets for HSR are higher, you can get discount up to 35% if you book it 27 days in advance at midnight Taiwan time, that is GMT + 8, through their website https://irs.thsrc.com.tw/IMINT?locale=en. Actually they offer four types of fare, the full fare, 10% discount, 20% discount, and 35% discount. Not every train offers maximum discount. And if it does, it will sell until all (and this is only a few) 35% discount tickets are sold. It will then start selling 20% discount tickets and so on. You can also purchase the HSR tickets from ticket windows or vending machines for the same day trip provided that the seat is still available because HSR offers reserved seats only. But there is a big problem for foreign tourists. It is because the system asks your Taiwanese phone number to be eligible to purchase the HSR tickets by online method. For this, I wrote an email message to my Taiwanese friend to persuade him letting me use his phone number, and I was successful.

For my travel purpose, I purchased Kaoshiung – Taichung and Taichung – Taipei tickets. I did get 35% discount ticket for the former leg, but only got 10% discount for the later perhaps because it was for the first weekend trip after new year holiday when there were lots of local people going back to Taipei for work. My suggestion is avoid going to Taiwan during or near holidays.

Having arrived in Taiwan, please visit the nearest train station to print your paper ticket using a ticket vending machine. The paper ticket will then be used to enter and exit the correct railway stations.

One negative point about this station is that unlike in Taipei where you can top up your stored-value card almost in every subway and rail station, I did not notice if there is such a facility to do that in Xin Zuoying.

  • Xin Zuoying train station, Kaoshiung, Taiwan
  • Row of vending machines for high speed rail tickets in Xin Zuoying station where you can purchase the same day tickets or print paper tickets for online and phone booking ones.

  • Xin Zuoying train station, Kaoshiung, Taiwan
  • Vending machine for commuter train tickets and the fare table. I purchased local train tickets for Tainan and be informed that the line color is blue.

  • Xin Zuoying train station, Kaoshiung, Taiwan
  • Departure announcement board. I checked the destination displayed in blue, and got information that the departure time is 10:45, the train number is 3148, and the track number is 2B. If you read Chinese then you will also get information on the destination which is Douliu.

  • Xin Zuoying train station, Kaoshiung, Taiwan
  • Travel office is also there where you can book land transportation. Offices with open space like this give a friendly impression to potential users.

  • Xin Zuoying train station, Kaoshiung, Taiwan
  • Food kiosks and even a supermarket (not shown) are available in this station. I got an impression that Xin Zuoying station is bigger and to some extent is more complete than Kaoshiung International Airport.

Xin Zuoying is an important transportation hub for Kaoshiung. From here you can go to the city center and airport using the subway, go to some tourist spots such as Eda Theme Park, Fo Guang Shan, and Lotus Pond by bus, and go to other parts of Taiwan such as Taichung and Taipei by train. The station is equipped with food kiosks, supermarket, department store, restaurants, and travel agents making it the most complete transportation hub in Southern Taiwan. Needless to say that it is also equipped with free wifi.
