A lot of biopics (or movies about real people) are made about successful people who did amazing jobs in their respective fields. I can’t think of many films that do the opposite until The Disaster Artist. A movie about director Tommy Wiseau who made the worst (as some would say) movie of all time: The Room. I have seen The Room and it was pretty bad; it was consistent; and the performances are laugh-out-loud bad. However, there is something to say about the passion that goes on to the creation of that movie which is the subject of The Disaster Artist.

  • The Disaster Artist is also about the friendship that formed between Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero as they embark on a journey towards stardom. Both of them wanted to become great actors and they moved together to Los Angeles to pursue their dreams only to find out that it’s a real climb up to the top of Hollywood. They were discouraged by a lot of people. When Greg made a joking statement to Tommy, “We should just create our own movie,” Tommy took it by heart and decided to make it a reality for both. Tommy wrote and directed The Room that stars him and Greg. The result was a huge disaster but it become a cult success since then.

  • The Disaster Artist and The Room has a lot of parallels in terms of filmmaking aspects. Tommy Wiseau directed and starred in The Room while James Franco (who plays Tommy) also directed and starred in The Disaster Artist. I am actually surprised that a movie about the making of a bad movie could be so good. James Franco absolutely transforms himself into Tommy Wiseau - the mannerisms, the looks, the accents, and the moves are almost carbon-copies of the real Tommy. Perhaps I will go on as far as to say that this is James Franco’s best performance of his career yet. It is so believable and you can see that he really put a lot of heart in his character to make it alive and palpable. If all is fair in the world, Franco should be nominated for a lot of awards in his performance here.

  • James’ younger brother Dave Franco stars as Greg Sestero, Tommy’s best friend. Dave is really good as well, in fact very important in key scenes. When the comedy becomes too overpowering, Dave’s reactions almost always become a drug that eases the comedy before it overstays its purpose. Also, the chemistry between the two is electrifying, turning the film into one of the best films about friendship.

  • Going into this movie, I always knew that it’s going to be very funny. The Room in itself is a hilarious movie despite the initial intent of the director to make it a serious movie, going as far as keeping it in one cinema to qualify for the Oscar. There are many things to laugh about in this movie, Tommy Wiseau’s character is in itself very funny, the way he moves or talks or when he laughs, “HA HA” is a sure way to hurt your stomach. While Tommy is serious in his work ethics the responses from his workmates are actually hilarious as well.

  • However, despite its comedic nature, there is plenty of heart too. In fact, the one thing that I didn’t expect from this a lot of emotions. I got emotional in the end, that to see someone so passionate about doing something is a triumph in itself, despite the bad outcome of his efforts. It’s much more less about the making of The Room, but the persistence in believing something and achieving it with full might. It is also more about the celebration of friendship that formed between the two protagonists, one that is so powerful and moving that it becomes one of the best friendships ever seen in movies.

With The Disaster Artist, we are able to get inside the mind of the maker of The Room. How it went from a dream to reality. It is one of 2017’s most enjoyable movies, and plenty of people should feel good after watching it. Fans of The Room will absolutely love this, but even if you haven’t seen the aforementioned movie there are still plenty of aspects to enjoy. It’s a heartwarming tale that is really funny and emotional - and if you haven’t seen it, I urge you to do so now. There’s a good chance you’ll love it.
