When Lady Bird was named the best reviewed movie of all time by review-aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, my interest in the movie skyrocketed. After all, I am a huge fan of Saoirse Ronan. At such a young age she has managed to become one of the most celebrated actresses of her generation. For what it’s worth, Lady Bird could just be another coming-of-age film, but upon further inspection, it’s actually much more than your typical comedy-drama flare.
  • Lady Bird (2017 Comedy-Drama Film)
  • Written and directed by Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird tells the story of Christine McPherson who calls herself “Lady Bird” and insist that everybody should too. It chronicles her last year in high school, and explores her transition to college that is often one of the most difficult phases of a person’s life. On top of that, it also shows the love-hate relationship that a mother and daughter normally have.

Greta Gerwig managed to create a very heartwarming movie, the kind that lingers long after you see it - and the effect is so catastrophic because of the universal themes the movie emits. Bring tissues if you could, for this is a ride where it’s impossible not to smile from ear to ear and then take you 180 to a heart-shattering ending.

  • But honestly, this movie could never work without the collective efforts of its cast. Saoirse Ronan proves once again that she’s more than just a child prodigy actress. She literally morphs into her character and becomes a fully-realized person as Lady Bird. What you see is not an actress but instead a real one. She offers a very convincing and empathetic performance that created the year’s most memorable character on screen. I honestly think that is my favorite performance by her by far.

  • Lady Bird (2017 Comedy-Drama Film)
  • Laurie Metcalf as Lady Bird’s mother is just as sensational and alive as Ronan. In fact, her scene-stealing sequence near the end of the movie will hit you like a rock has been thrown straight to your heart. She’s just like my mother, and could be anybody else’s mother as well and I absolutely feel for her.

  • Other big names like Lucas Hedges, Timothee Chalamet, Beanie Feldstein, and Tracy Letts all worked to create a believable environment filled with convincing persons that their collective works become magic that transcends from screen.

  • Lady Bird (2017 Comedy-Drama Film)
  • Perhaps it is the familiarity of Lady Bird that really connects well with audience. At some point in your life you probably felt something like Lady Bird did. And I’m already expecting that when I become a parent I could feel something similar to her mother. It is such an honest portrayal of a normal life that is so worthy to tell. Did you ever wanted to get out of your town because you got tired of it? I bet you did. Did you ever had quarrels with your parents over random things? I bet you did too. The truth is that at some point you feel like this movie is not a movie but a footage of real life events. And before you know it, it feels like you’re actually part of this because you can absolutely relate with the characters.

All in all, Lady Bird offers nothing new. It’s not a groundbreaking film that breaks a lot of barriers or tries to tell a story every other directors are afraid to tell. In fact it’s not even a beautiful-looking movie in the vein of La La Land or The Revenant or The Tree of Life. But Lady Bird is so grounded in reality that it’s really hard to spot a single fake thing in it. It’s a movie that could be easily loved without begging you too, I don’t even know if its main goal is to impress people because in its core it is just another movie that feels personal to its director, so personal that it becomes a universal teller of truth about us as normal people. If you haven’t seen it please do, it is one of the best movies this year.

Thanks for your input but it would be more helpful if you could give insights as to why this is a bad review. It would certainly help me do it better the next time.
