  • I am usually not a fan of romance films, the reason I watched this is because of a few of the casts, namely Ethan Juan, Yang Mi and Jiang Yiyan
  • However, I am glad I gave this movie a shot
  • I’ve mentioned previously that I’m doing a movie marathon of Jiang Yiyan’s movies and while her roles are all very interesting, the movie usually are lacking somehow
  • I can’t really pinpoint what it is – I am guessing it’s the carefree atmosphere in the European cities and the passion between the couples in some of the short stories
  • While I cannot say the writing is excellent, in fact, if you’re a very pragmatic and analytical person, you’ll find yourself rolling your eyes at most of the stories

This romance anthology is made up of 5 love stories that happened in 5 different cities – Prague, Shanghai, Paris, Hokkaido and Florence. The stories portrayed different kind of love relationships.

However, I am glad I gave this movie a shot.

  • I’ve mentioned previously that I’m doing a movie marathon of Jiang Yiyan’s movies and while her roles are all very interesting, the movie usually are lacking somehow. However, this one is the exactly opposite; her roles wasn’t as outstanding as her others but this movie is very enjoyable and actually make me feels something.

I can’t really pinpoint what it is – I am guessing it’s the carefree atmosphere in the European cities and the passion between the couples in some of the short stories.

It’s very difficult to not spoil the movie and still give a quick summary of the plots, so I guess I won’t give any. It’s much better that you watch and feel the plot and romantic atmosphere for yourself because only then can you experience the full satisfaction and passion from the movie.

There are 3 short stories in the anthology that I really love. One of them is the one that take place in Paris, starring Huang Xuan and Sandrine Pinna. I love their very impromptu and “just-do-it” kind of relation. It feels exciting and passionate, something that I won’t do in real life but is a pleasure to watch on screen. The twist at the end is not really needed though.

  • The other one is the one in Hokkaido starring Jiang Yiyan and Joseph Chang that is somewhat different from the rest of the stories in the anthology. The rest of the stories are more of flings and passionate “collisions” between the couples but this one talking about a couple on honeymoon, their differences and sacrifices.

  • Cities in Love (Chinese Romance Anthology)
  • I really love the ending of this story that took place in Hokkaido, it’s very touching and it sent a very important message to married couples out there.

The last one is the one that took place in Florence, starring Ethan Juan and Bai Baihe. I didn’t especially like the love story in this one but I really love the atmosphere it portrayed.

  • Cities in Love (Chinese Romance Anthology)
  • People can just come together, have a meal and sing and dance to music. The atmosphere is just so great and carefree that I fell in love with it.

  • Cities in Love (Chinese Romance Anthology)
  • While I cannot say the writing is excellent, in fact, if you’re a very pragmatic and analytical person, you’ll find yourself rolling your eyes at most of the stories. But I guess, if the writing is so logical and pragmatic, it won’t be as romantic. I guess they just don’t co-exist. The editing and directing are not superb too however, I do enjoy it a lot.

  • Cities in Love (Chinese Romance Anthology)
  • The settings are beautiful and the atmosphere is great. It made me want to grab my passport and head to one of the cities mentioned in the movie! (Not for flings but to enjoy the atmosphere there!)

If you’re a romance lover, you definitely should give this movie a try but if you’re someone who prefers logical movies, you should find yourself another movie to watch.

The last photo of the cityscape is really beautiful.
