  • I can’t believe it, the best psychological thriller-horror film I watched this year actually comes from an anime
  • I have never thought anime could be this good and thrilling, but Perfect Blue just proved me wrong
  • The most creepiest thing was when she received a letter with a link to a website, her “fan site”
  • People around her, usually those who had made her do something against her wish started dying one by one, first it was the scriptwriter who added a rape scene for Mima then it was the photographer who took nude photos of her
  • However, this film may not be for everyone, due to the sexual, nudity and violence

  • Perfect Blue (Psychological thriller-horror Anime)
  • Perfect Blue is a 1997 Japanese psychological thriller-horror anime film directed by Satoshi Kon and written by Sadayuki Murai, based on the novel Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis by Yoshikazu Takeuchi.

The story follows Mima, a member of a not-so-famous idol group, CHAM and her transition to become an actress.

After Mima, announced her decision to leave the idol group and world, she started receiving threatening letters and fax which creeps her out.

  • Perfect Blue (Psychological thriller-horror Anime)
  • The most creepiest thing was when she received a letter with a link to a website, her “fan site”. There is a blog, supposedly wrote by herself on the site that describe in detail what happened in her life and even her inner thoughts.

Mima got really creep out and starts to get wary of people around her, she started doubting herself and even starts to hallucinate.

  • Then, something scarier happened. People around her, usually those who had made her do something against her wish started dying one by one, first it was the scriptwriter who added a rape scene for Mima then it was the photographer who took nude photos of her.

  • Perfect Blue (Psychological thriller-horror Anime)
  • The content of the blog also starts to get darker, but at the same time writing untrue things about what Mima feels.

However, Mima starts to believe that she might be the one who wrote the blog when she saw a shirt full of blood and the death of the photography in the news, because she just dreamt of herself killing someone.

  • Perfect Blue (Psychological thriller-horror Anime)
  • I really have to bow down to the mind-twisting writing and superb drawing skills of the animator and artist.

  • Perfect Blue (Psychological thriller-horror Anime)
  • The anime is full of beautiful, realistic and detailed backgrounds. The characters are well designed too. One look at this guy and you know he is a crazy or psychotic person.

  • Perfect Blue (Psychological thriller-horror Anime)
  • However, I feel some of the characters seem to suffer from “similar face syndrome” and it is sometimes a little difficult to tell who is who, without looking at the dressing and hairstyle.

  • Perfect Blue (Psychological thriller-horror Anime)
  • The fluidity of the anime, also shocked and surprised me. Especially of the scene whereby the girls sing and dance, it feels like I am watching real person dancing. The expressions of the characters are also very well done and you can totally feel their emotions.

  • Perfect Blue (Psychological thriller-horror Anime)
  • The editing also does a good job. There are some parts of the anime that seems really confusing, you won’t know if what is happening is the reality or just acting. And the confusion is for a good reason – Mima’s is in a state of confusion herself, during that time because she had taken up a role with spilt personality which she in her real life is starting to believe she has another personality in her too.

I think this is cleverly done in keeping the suspense and showing her confusion.

This anime has got to be a classic, because it is so well done. There is hardly anything that I find negative or bad about it, well except for the “similar face syndrome” but that really does nothing much to affect the whole watching experience.

The film kept me tense, curious and wondering throughout the time I am watching it, and the ending is just so mind-blowing and unexpected.

However, this film may not be for everyone, due to the sexual, nudity and violence. But if you don’t mind watching films with sexual, nudity and violence, and love Psychological thriller, you have to give this anime a try.

Indeed, I watched this to. It was very thrilling all the way through. I lost
a little interest in the middle but then it quickly came back. Very interesting,
would definitely suggest to other people who like this particular anime genre.

I think Anime have more liberty and freedom than movies, hence the more intense plot

At least they are necessary not added just for the sake. It s a good anime that is not overly exaggerated or illogical. Classic indeed.
