  • The story follows a doctor, Jenny Davin in her journey to find out the name of an unidentified girl who knocked on her clinic’s door for help
  • The film is refreshing to watch because I've never experience any movie with such non-commercial style
  • It's very simple, and in fact a little raw
  • It also doesn't play around much with perspectives, in fact it's just about Jenny and there are hardly any long shorts or anything to really show the environment around
  • I actually enjoyed following Jenny in her investigation and search for the girl's name

The Unknown Girl (French: La Fille inconnue) is a 2016 Belgian-French drama film directed by the Dardenne brothers. Starring Adèle Haenel, Olivier Bonnaud, Jérémie Renier, and Louka Minnella.

I actually think this film is more like a slice-of-life or documentary than drama, because it’s pretty mellow.

  • The story follows a doctor, Jenny Davin in her journey to find out the name of an unidentified girl who knocked on her clinic’s door for help. However, she didn’t answer the door. The girl was later found dead at a river bank nearby.

The journey is not an easy one and she got herself into a few unwanted situations.

  • The film is refreshing to watch because I’ve never experience any movie with such “non-commercial” style. It’s very simple, and in fact a little raw. It almost feels like a cameraman following Jenny around - all the scenes are what Jenny experience and sees, if there is something that happened around her that she didn’t know, it won’t be on screen and we won’t know either. It gives a feeling of “realness” - I didn’t felt that this is a commercial film I am watching.

  • The film doesn’t have fanciful effects or transitions. It’s just very plain and clean cuts between scenes. It also doesn’t play around much with perspectives, in fact it’s just about Jenny and there are hardly any long shorts or anything to really show the environment around. However, I can still pretty much tell what is going on.

I guess the best part of the film is actually in the cast, mainly Adèle Haenel (Jenny) and the feel of the movie.

Adèle Haenel is a very charming actress, she can hold the attention of the audience with her charm and of course acting. The film is pretty much “all about Jenny” so she is in almost every scene, it must be very stressful for her because the fate of the film depends very much on her performance. And she proves to be fighter, overcoming the pressure and delivering very well.

There are just so many quiet scenes that she is able to create the mood and speak through her eyes, facial expressions and body language, even without any camera effects.

  • I think the directors did a great job with the cinematography, however the writing could be better. The story took a very bad turn after Jenny’s journey to look for the name “ends”. It also lacks drama and climax and there are a few things that are a little far-fetched. The ending is also very sudden and the “twist” at the end is pretty redundant.

The characters aren’t that fantastic too. There is hardly anyone else except Jenny (the rest just have too little screen time to be judged) and I think Jenny is being too “calm”. She must be under so much pressure (her guilt, her busy work schedule and the setbacks in her journey to get the girl’s name) and she is still so calm - there are a few scenes with her smoking to release stress but that’s it. Maybe she has very high EQ, but it made her kind of boring and flat. It won’t hurt if she was to be a little more “agitated” like when she lectured her intern, Julien.

  • Despite the somewhat average writing, this movie is quite a good watch as the acting and cinematography made up for the writing. I actually enjoyed following Jenny in her investigation and search for the girl’s name. It feels a little like I am walking down a small unsafe suburb in Europe along with her.

If you enjoy documentary style or slice of life movies, you can try The Unknown Girl out.
