  • As for the spots to visit I recommend Kyauktawgyi Phaya for its exterior and interior beauty, Sandamuni Phaya for its numerous white stupas, Kuthodaw Phaya for its large stupa, and Mandalay Royal Palace for its history and again exterior beauty of the buildings
  • There is only a large empty hall in Atumashi Phaya, you may be disappointed as the admission to this spot is not free
  • You had better to also avoid Shwenandaw Kyaung as it is only a rickety old building and nothing interesting inside, moreover you are charged an admission fee to enter
  • Kyauktawgyi Phaya is the most beautiful building in Mandalay, both exterior and interior are rich with ethnical design
  • I noticed there were some souvenir sellers near Shwenandaw Kyaung

Mandalay was not in my program at first. But my wife asked if we could visit other towns beyond Yangon during our stay in Myanmar. We then went there and feel lucky to get this chance. Mandalay is located in the central of Myanmar but the weather was warm to hot in December last year. The main advantage of visiting this town in December is that there is no rain in this time of the year.

As for the spots to visit I recommend Kyauktawgyi Phaya for its exterior and interior beauty, Sandamuni Phaya for its numerous white stupas, Kuthodaw Phaya for its large stupa, and Mandalay Royal Palace for its history and again exterior beauty of the buildings. With the exception of the Royal Palace, the other three spots are very near each other, so you can go on foot to visit one place after the other.

There are a couple more tourist spots that I do not recommend to visit particularly if you have limited time to spend in Mandalay. In Maha Myat Muni Phaya, taking picture is prohibited unless you pay a camera fee. Do not go there after 7 pm as they close many doors leaving limited area for tourists. There is only a large empty hall in Atumashi Phaya, you may be disappointed as the admission to this spot is not free. You had better to also avoid Shwenandaw Kyaung as it is only a rickety old building and nothing interesting inside, moreover you are charged an admission fee to enter. In all, there are three places urge you to pay the admission fee, the other one is the Mandalay Royal Palace. The fee (they name it as Mandalay Archeological Zone fee) is 10.000 kyat (or around 7.50 dollars) per person. It is a one-time payment, so you do need to pay again in the other two places once you have paid in the first spot, and it is valid for five consecutive days. But who will stay in Mandalay for such a long period?

We spent two nights and could manage to visit all the aforementioned spots plus the Moustache Brothers. The last is a comical performance using politics as their topics. Therefore, it may not be suitable for all spectators. But they combine it with some traditional dances. Should you go there, be prepare to pay 10.000 kyat per person for their 60 minutes performance.

  • Kyauktawgyi Phaya is the most beautiful building in Mandalay, both exterior and interior are rich with ethnical design.

  • Sandamuni Phaya. Where else in Mandalay you can see the nice mixture between white and golden stupas?

  • City of Mandalay, Myanmar
  • Kuthodaw Phaya. Its large golden stupa may be the only of this kind in Mandalay. Should you have no chance to visit Yangon, then this may be regarded as similar to Shwedagon Phaya. The last is much more beautiful for sure.

  • Royal Mandalay Palace. Look at the statues of King Thibaw and his queen sitting on the throne. The distance from the main road is about 2 km. It is wise to hire a taxi to visit this place.

  • Moustache Brothers. Should you plan to Mandalay, pay a visit to Moustache Brothers. I do not think their performance will last very long because the performers are old persons and they do not have younger generation and their successors.

  • Maha Myat Muni Phaya. Perhaps it is better to visit this place in the day time (I did it in the evening). Unfortunately, ladies are not permitted to enter to the main stage.

  • Inside the Atumashi Phaya, you will find only a huge empty room. I do not think that it is useful to visit this place

  • Shwenandaw Kyaung is the other place I do not recommend you to visit unless you want to purchase some Mandalay souvenirs then you can find it outside the premises.

Mandalay is a pretty nice city, but public transport is scarce down there. Hailing a taxi in the street is almost impossible. Limited number of taxi is available in some tourist spots. If you are lucky, you can get a taxi on the street for around 5.000 kyat for 5 km journey. Booking a taxi through your hotel may be a good idea. Usually they will charge you 25.000 kyat per half day, or 40.000 kyat per full day. Book a hotel near as many tourist spots as possible, I did it and got a hotel in 65th street between 27th and 28th streets, to save some travel expenses.

Souvenir is not very easy to find. I noticed there were some souvenir sellers near Shwenandaw Kyaung. Prices offered are almost double. My advice is to negotiate from 50 % to 70 % at most.
