Wuhan is the capital city of Hubei province in China, and it consists of three districts. If you arrive by rail, it will be easy to get to the city by subway. But if you arrive by air, than taxi is the best choice as the airport is not connected to the subway. Although subway network is spread throughout the city, there is no subway station near to any tourist spots. For this, you have to use the public bus which costs you 2 Chinese yuan (30 cents). The problem is that all destinations displayed in every bus stop are written in Chinese only. But one thing may help you, use only public buses 402 or 411 as they stop at three main tourist spots, namely Hubei Provincial Museum, Yellow Crane Tower, and Heptacord Museum. You may like to use public bus 401 that has a stop at another tourist spot, a big Buddhist temple. However, not every bus has an electronic display informing the next bus stop. Even if they do, the display is only in Chinese characters. If you have your destinations written in Chinese, than this may help.

Hubei Provincial Museum provides traditional music performance which is only twice a day. But it closes without notice (even in Chinese) if it floods (usually in summer). Yellow Crane Tower is the icon of this city. The admission fee is 80 yuan (or 12 dollars). Elderly of 60 years of age or above (including foreigners) can enjoy 50% discounted rate. It is written somewhere nears the ticket office but the placement is inconspicuous. What you need to do is to show your passport.

The Heptacord Museum is built to commemorate a music player and his friend. The premise is small but beautiful. Again elderly can enjoy discounted admission fee.

Do not visit Wuhan in the summer as it is very hot and humid there. I could not stand walking in the open air in Wuhan even in the evening without being drenched in sweat. Moreover floods often threaten in this time of the year. Luckily I arrived in Wuhan just a day after the floods receded. Remaining wet was still apparent at the crossing tunnel, subway was already in operation, but the most miserable I missed the Hubei Provincial Museum which might be under maintenance after being flooded.

  • Dorsett Wuhan is the hotel where I stayed during in Wuhan. It is located in Jianghan Road, the heart of Wuhan where you can enjoy shopping, dining, or taking public buses #402 which will get you to main tourist spots.

  • City of Wuhan, China
  • Public bus #402 has a stop just in the doorstep of Dorsett Wuhan hotel. It is one of few public buses that are tourist friendly (but I could find hardly any foreign tourists in the bus). For just 2 yuan (30 cents) you can easily visit some tourist spots such as Hubei Provincial Museum, Yellow Crane Tower, and heptacord Museum.

  • Pedestrian shopping street near my hotel is nice for shopping or just for leisure. In the evening, there are lots of people around walking, or even having meal while sitting in the middle of this street.

  • Menu list in a low cost restaurant. It is difficult to order as there is no English translation and nobody speaks English in the restaurant.

  • In this self service restaurant, you can just take what you want, mixed vegetable or roasted meat. I ate here twice since the foods are tasteful, the cost is also cheap. For 15 yuan per person you can have a good meal.

  • Hubei Provincial Museum. It is one of the top tourist spots in Wuhan. Unfortunately it was closed without notice when I went there, probably they did some maintenance after a big flood just to days ago. It is recommended to pay a visit to this museum especially to watch traditional music instruments performance.

  • Yellow Crane Tower the icon of Wuhan. The admission fee is 80 yuan. But if you are above 60 (regardless your nationals) you are entitled to have a 50% discount. In this five storeyed building you will admire old paintings.

  • The Heptacord Museum. It is built to commemorate the friendship of the heptacord player and his friend. It is said that when his friend died, he never played again, even he broke the music instrument. There is also a 50% discount on admission fee for seniors.

  • Perhaps this is not the only place on earth where you can learn the compass direction on a street name. But this really helps people to get the correct direction.

Wuhan is a large city consisting of three districts and supported by a railway station in each district. Since there is no many tourist spots, you may probably need only three nights here. If you plan to go to Wuhan, I recommend you to find a hotel around Jianghan road pedestrian shopping street.
