The First Wives Club is one of my favorite comedies of all time. The first time I saw the movie I was young, so I did not grasp the significance of both cast and the plot as a whole, but now that I am older it is one of the movies I honestly enjoy watching over and over again.

The First Wives Club is an all star cast starring Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler, and Diane Keaton who are scorned women seeking revenge against their cheating husbands. The opening of the movie takes place in Middlebury College in 1969. It is graduation day and Elise, Annie and Brenda are in Cynthia's dorm room waiting on her to arrive. When Cynthia arrives she is holding four boxes which contains genuine pearls for each of the ladies as a reminder to always be there for each other because they are bound by friendship and love.

The movie then transitions to present day where Cynthia was actually looking through a memory book of herself and the other women on graduation day. Her mascara is running so it is obvious that she has been crying, and her large cup of alcohol did not help matters. Cynthia glances down at a newspaper which is showing her ex husband and his new wife, and in a fit of rage she throws the newspaper in the air. She turns to grab a couple of letters and requests that her maid mail them for her and gives her the rest of the day off.

It is clear that Cynthia is not coping well after her divorce, and walking out onto a balcony in the dead of winter in New York does not help prove she is sane. Cynthia appears calm, even when she climbs to stand up on her ledge, and she takes her last inhale of cigarette and jumps to her death with a smile on her face.

We are introduced to Annie who is sneaking into her house the next morning, only to be startled by her daughter who decided to stay the night since her classes were cancelled. Annie is grilled by her daughter and she finally concedes and tells her she was with Aaron last night. The daughter is upset because she knows her father is using her mother and wants her to be free of him. Annie asks why her daughter is in such a bad mood, and she finally decides it has to be a boy; that is when the daughter corrects her and tells her she is a lesbian. The look on Annie's face alone was priceless, and it was made even worse when her daughter said she wants to tell her dad on a special day like Father's Day or Christmas. It is clear the tension runs deep between father and daughter.
Next is Elise who is in the office of her plastic surgeon's office. She tells Morris she wants her lips plumped because she has been out of work for 18 months and is desperate to get a new role with a hot new young producer, who just so happens to working with her husband. Morris tells her if he gives Elise one more face lift she will be able to blink her lips which I found hysterical. Because she is an actress she is obsessed with looking young, and forces Morris to do the lip procedure anyway.

I have so many favorite moments from the First Wives Club, and I always find myself laughing harder than I did before. It also made me feel for the women who have been neglected in their relationships, and how many of them have actually felt so low in life that the only way they felt they could cope was to commit suicide. I think it was an important issue to raise, and I think the comedy aspect of the movie helped to make the subject matter not so gloomy, but one you could openly discuss. The movie is driven by an all-star cast, and I am glad they chose Goldie, Diane and Bette as the leading roles because there was such a strong, natural bond among the three of them that I do not think the movie would have been as successful without them.
