I'm not a real Major Lazer fan. I've only been really listening to them since 2013, a little before I went to see them in concert for the first time. While I do like a few of their songs, I have to say that I'm not as hugely invested in them as I prefer DJs such as Deadmau5, Skrillex and David Guetta.

In case you somehow live under a rock and haven't heard of them, Major Lazer is an American electronic music band that was formed some time in 2008. The band gained most of their popularity in 2013, shortly after the release of their second album which was entitled "Free the Universe and Apocalypse Soon".

Major Lazer currently has four members. They are Diplo, Jillionaire and Walshy Fire.

As I mentioned, I've always prefered some other electronic bands and DJs a lot more than Major Lazer, but I do like a few of their songs. I remember the first time I actually heard something from Major Lazer was shortly after they released their first album and I heard "Pon De Floor " with popular Jamaican Dancehall Deejay Vybz Kartel on the radio. Unlike many other people at the time, I had almost no interest in Vybz Kartel, but it was that particular collaboration that caused me to suddenly take an interest in discovering whatever other songs that he might have had.

A part from that, I tend to prefer a few of Major Lazer's later songs. A number of them is featured on their album "Free the Universe". For example I like "Watch Out for This (Bumaye)" which features popular Jamaican Dancehall Deejay Busy Signal, The Flexican and FS Green. I also like "Jet Blue Jet" which also features Leftside, GTA, Zia Benjamin, Razz and Biggy.

On their later album "Peace Is the Mission" I pretty much was only interested in "Lean On" featuring DJ Snake and MO.

Unlike many electronic bands or DJs that I'm actually very excited to see, I've seen Major Lazer live in concert twice. I can remember that I didn't expect it to be as great as it was the first time, because I went with someone and I was mostly interested in seeing some of the other artistes that they had brought with them. Nevertheless, I have to admit that I actually ended up enjoying their segment of the concert much better than the other artistes that I actually came to see.

Yes, I was eager to see the other artistes, but I thought that Major Lazer was a lot more electrifying with their performances and engaged the audiences much more. There was one point where Diplo crowd surfed in a plastic bubble ball and I have to say that it was cooler than I wanted to admit. The band even threw free items to the crowd, which I decided to forego because I didn't want to get trampled.

While I did like the song "Lean On" by Major Lazer, I remember that shortly after the video was released some people began to complain about cultural appropriation being used in the video. This was mainly because they thought that the video's Indian dancing theme was only exploiting the "exoticism" of the culture to sell the song, while being completely ignorant of Indian culture on a whole.

Those people might be right about the cultural appropriation, but in truth I never really considered it until they complained.
One thing I definitely respect about this band despite some people's accusation of cultural appropriation is that they incorporated Dancehall music along with Electronic Dance Music. I'm not saying they're the first to do it, but they certainly have been one of the most successful at it. The good thing about it too is that it makes Dancehall music interesting to people like myself who have never really had much of an interest in it.

If you like Electronic Dance Music and Reggae or Dancehall, then you might just like Major Lazer's music. It can be pretty addictive, and their concerts aren't too bad either.
