If you’re a pet owner like me than you might dread that time of the year when you have to take your pet to get its annual shots and tests. Let’s face it– it costs a lot especially if you are me– I have 16 pets. That’s right! I have One dog, four cats, and ELEVEN turtles! Just taking one pet once a year is expensive enough but imagine when the others need annual check ups or get sick. Well, we lost a cat last year to cancer and it we thought it was about time to start looking into insurance for our pets.

  • After a lot of research we were afraid we were coming up short. There are a wide variety of pet insurances that will cover not only vet visits but major tests and surgeries but the premiums were just too much. We were about to abandon all hope of getting insurance until we checked further more into Nationwide’s Pet Insurance. They too had insurances that could cover nearly every accident, every visit, every surgery, every test– which we couldn’t afford. BUT they did have WELLNESS Insurance.

  • Nationwide’s Wellness Insurance covers the annual trip to the vet and so much more. It will also cover a certain amount of procedures and tests per year and for one manageable price. The price, of course, depends on the information you fill out at the website about your pet(s). Ours was a little over $100 a year for each of our cats with a small discount for having multiple pets. (One, Bazinga, is pictured above). Oh, and you are allowed to choose your own vet for each policy! How great is that?

  • Once you enroll there’s a database on the website that contains any forms you may need such as claim forms, you can check the status of your claims, get up to date information about your policy, and much more. The website is very user friendly. You also receive a packet in the mail. You get one packet for each pet and you get a claim form.

  • Bazinga was our first visit to our vet with pet insurance. We never had pet insurance before but our vet was more than happy to talk us through it. Basically, you bring the claim form with your pet’s policy number on it and the vet fills his or her portion out for you. You fill in the rest and ask for an itemized invoice at the front desk. You must submit this itemized list with your claim form. Bazinga got his yearly shots, an exam, a fecal test, and a blood test. His bill was $247.47. We had to pay that in full that day but we properly filled out the claim form and sent it out right away. There’s additional ways to send the claim form. It can be done online or you can fax it. We snail mailed ours.

Nationwide will e-mail you upon receiving your claim and will e-mail you again once they have reviewed the claim. The process took only a couple of weeks after Bazinga’s visit.

  • To our surprise, Nationwide covered most of the vet bill. The vet bill was $247.47 and they reimbursed us $205.00 from it. We were very pleased! This took a lot of stress off of us about taking our pets to the vet. In fact, we’ll be adding two new pets to our policy very soon! Thanks to Nationwide it’s not going to cost thousands of dollars a year for us to take our pets to the vet. And guess what? There’s more to smile about!

  • Nationwide Pet Wellness Insurance
  • Nationwide Pet Insurance doesn’t just cover cats and dogs. Your reptile friends can have Wellness insurance too! Not just reptiles but hamsters, rabbits, guinea pigs, and many more can be insured as well!

I don’t believe it is available in Canada but they are pretty customer friendly. I would reach out to them via e-mail or snail mail and ask them. If they don’t than perhaps they have a partner company in Canada that they can direct you too for a similar service.
