With all the free apps available on the App Store for iOS and Google Play for Android, an app has to really be something special if you’re going to consider paying for it, right? After all, we’ve become conditioned to getting free apps and looking at ads as we peck away on our cell phones and tablets, so there are more than a few of us who just figure everything should be free.

However, there are some apps that are so good that you will want to consider paying for them. “Airport XP” for both iOS and Android is one of those games. It is addictive, and here’s something really cool about — it is exactly the same on either device. That’s probably because “Airport XP” originally started life as a Windows game, but has been adapted to mobile operating systems and that is a great thing as it lends itself to screen controls much more readily than it does to a mouse and keyboard.

  • The concept in “Airport XP” is very easy to grasp — land planes, unload passengers, repair or refuel planes, load passengers and then send them on their way. While the concept is easy enough to grasp, the mechanics take some getting used to, so there is a handy tutorial to work through that will teach you everything you need to know.

  • This game does possess quite a bit of charm. You get bright colors, emotive airplanes and graphics that are not overly detailed but do contribute to the atmosphere of each of the eight airports in the game quite a bit. See those smiling airplanes? The goal is to keep them that way. This is a time management game, meaning you get a lot of points for landing planes and sending them for takeoff quickly, but your score will suffer is those planes start to “scowl” as they are falling behind schedule.

And, don’t let those cutesy graphics fool you — this game gets fast and furious in a hurry, meaning you’ll be tapping that screen like mad to get planes to steer around each other, sending them to layover spaces to wait until they can unload or load passengers, etc.

  • If you mange to keep those planes on schedule, you’ll get a bunch of happy customers and that leads to higher scores, awards and money. Yes, money is important in this game as it allows you to purchase more profitable airplanes, faster gates, quicker repair shops and gas stations and other things that will allow you to deal with planes in a hurry and keep those scores high.

  • Airport XP for iOS and Android
  • There are eight airports in this game and each of them is broken up into stages that last but a few minutes (in other words, you can take part in some quick gaming with this, yet still participate in a campaign that might be quite long). Between each stage, you get the chance to spend your hard earned cash on those improvements that allow you to deal with customers quickly.

  • Airport XP for iOS and Android
  • The goal here, obviously, is to keep customers happy during each stage in each airport. If you can manage to do that, you’ll get big bonuses at the end of each airport that will allow you to grab upgrades right off the bat and keep being successful.

Here’s a handy tip — when you get to the levels with fog and ice, make sure to buy the machines that will get those stuff off your runways in a hurry. Ice and fog make runways unusable, so the sooner you can get rid of those hazards, the better.

  • Airport XP for iOS and Android
  • Not happy with how you did on an airport? No problem — you are free to go back and repeat any level on any airport you want. That helps lead to replay value and that is a good thing.

Speaking of replay value, you can unlock a paper airplane mode after you complete all eight airports. That feature simply means that those charming airplanes are replaced with paper airplanes. Uh, yeah. That doesn’t lead to replay value, but something else does — this game is addictive, and you’ll have no problem simply creating a new profile and starting again when you’ve completed all the airports.

All in all, this is one of those casual/time management games in a genre that has been beaten to death over the years. Still, “Airport XP” is a breath of fresh air in a somewhat stale genre and is evidence of how awesome a time management game can be when in the hands of designers who clearly had a good time with the game they were development.

Yes, you do have to pay for this game, but the price is fairly low and is worth every penny you’ll pay. If you don’t have this on your mobile device, you owe it to yourself to check it out.

I am kinda torn regarding this question because if the app is truly useful (health related, keeping children safe etc) you may purchase but I can honestly say i haven’t purchased an app in 5 years.

A lot of people just don’t buy apps and that is fine. However, this one is fairly inexpensive and it is a heck of a lot of fun. The choice, then, is yours — you might find something better than this for free, but I went ahead and paid my 99 cents because I enjoy this game that much.
