  • I like donuts as an occasional treat and I really like pumpkin, so I didn't want to pass up an opportunity to see what these tasted like
  • I tried the Hostess Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice Mini Donettes too, and while I won't go into too much detail about them here as the main focus of my thoughts will be on the TastyKake donuts, I will say that I prefer the Hostess brand's take on mini pumpkin donuts
  • I probably still wouldn't have bought them again due to there being a better alternative in the form of the less messy yet much more flavorful Hostess variety, but I would have enjoyed these more
  • While prepackaged donuts sitting on store shelves will never be quite as fresh as donuts made just hours ago in a bakery and are sitting out on trays just waiting to be bought, I believe these do come close
  • If you do give them a try for yourself, as odd as it may sound, I suggest using a fork to break them into halves or one-thirds and eating them that way, this way, less chance of a mess, although the powdered sugar may still find its way onto your table or floor, so be prepared for a little light cleaning duty afterward

If the cooler temperatures and changing of the leaves wasn’t a big enough clue that autumn is here - assuming you live in a part of the world where autumn is a thing - then the countless, and I do mean countless, pumpkin-flavored foods that are now decorating the aisles of grocery stores should be enough to bring a person up to speed that summer is done and over and autumn is now here. Even if you’re just making a quick run to the store for one or two things, odds are, you’ll pass at least a couple displays housing pumpkin-something. For me, recently, it was the TastyKake Fall Edition Pumpkin Spice Mini Donuts that were being prominently displayed on a side end cap at one of my local grocery chains, and I didn’t hesitate much in picking up a bag to take along with me. I like donuts as an occasional treat and I really like pumpkin, so I didn’t want to pass

up an opportunity to see what these tasted like.

Now, these aren’t the first pumpkin flavored mini donuts that I’ve had. I tried the Hostess Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice Mini Donettes too, and while I won’t go into too much detail about them here as the main focus of my thoughts will be on the TastyKake donuts, I will say that I prefer the Hostess brand’s take on mini pumpkin donuts. What did I find unappealing about the TastyKake take on the mini pumpkin donuts? Well, for one, they’re a lot messier than the Hostess ones, and while I wouldn’t mind the mess so much if they were truly tasty, but I didn’t find them to be flavorful enough to make up for powder sugar that loves to stick to anything that it comes into contact with. Wiping my hands with a napkin didn’t help that much either. That basically meant I couldn’t touch anything while eating these donuts unless I washed my hands

thoroughly first to rid myself of the stickiness and the powder sugar.

As I said, I wouldn’t mind the mess so much if the flavor more than made up for it. Sometimes, the messiest donuts are the tastiest, but sadly that’s not the case here. There’s not a whole lot of pumpkin punch in these little donuts. I feel like cinnamon and powdered sugar had more of a presence than the pumpkin spice, and that’s not a good thing when these mini donuts are supposed to be all about the pumpkin flavor. More of the pumpkin flavor would have helped boost my opinion of these little donuts. I probably still wouldn’t have bought them again due to there being a better alternative in the form of the less messy yet much more flavorful Hostess variety, but I would have enjoyed these more.

I do feel though that the freshness, softness and overall moistness of these mini donuts did stand out as being a very big plus.

While prepackaged donuts sitting on store shelves will never be quite as fresh as donuts made just hours ago in a bakery and are sitting out on trays just waiting to be bought, I believe these do come close. Had there been more pumpkin spice flavor, then I think the freshness and the moistness would have helped enhance the flavor even more, but unfortunately, it’s the cinnamon and powdered sugar that end up shining more, when really, the spotlight should have been on the pumpkin. If there is one thing that these TastyKake mini donuts have over the Hostess ones, it’s overall freshness, softness and moistness. Maybe not by a whole lot, but to an extent.

The TastyKake Fall Edition Pumpkin Spice Mini Donuts didn’t hit the mark for me. While they do have some redeeming qualities, mainly when it comes to the overall freshness of the donuts, they simply didn’t stand out. With so many pumpkin-flavored foods readily available in stores and all

around in general this time of the year, there’s no reason to settle for average, and average is how I’d describe the pumpkin spice flavor of these donuts. If you do give them a try for yourself, as odd as it may sound, I suggest using a fork to break them into halves or one-thirds and eating them that way, this way, less chance of a mess, although the powdered sugar may still find its way onto your table or floor, so be prepared for a little light cleaning duty afterward! While I wouldn’t buy them again, I encourage those that are curious to give both these and the Hostess Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice Mini Donettes a try and come to your own conclusion, because I have had a couple of friends tell me that they prefer the TastyKake ones over the Hostess variety, but my taste buds are more inclined to go with the Hostess brand when it comes to pumpkin spice mini donuts.

I’m glad you enjoyed them. I know others that did as well. I just didn’t quite care for them as much as I thought I would and ended up liking the Hostess pumpkin donuts more, both because of the glaze and the overall taste, but there’s room for more than just one or two pumpkin donuts in stores, so people should go with the brand they like most.
