  • I think the dome feature is great as it doubles as a popcorn bowl once it has finished, you can take the red lid and cap the vent, and turn it upside down
  • I have usually ended up with unpopped kernels more than expected (if it is any more than left with microwave popcorn, it is too many unpopped kernels) So that is why I do not rate this item as highly as I might have normally (It was a thoughtful gift idea, I will say) I like the bowl/dome feature and I am sure that I can put it to good use

This red popcorn popper (model no. PC17583, carried by a company called “Focus Electronics”) was a gift from my brother in law and his girlfriend one Christmas. Surprisingly, I had been wanting a popcorn popper just like one of those “air poppers” that are hard to find now, but this machine ended up in storage for about a year before I finally broke down and gave it a try next “movie night”. The way this mechanism works, is it has several parts: the basin which has a nonstick coating, the dome shape bowl that covers it when it is in operation, and a little metal rod that goes

onto a pivot point in the middle of the basin. When the machine is on, the rod spins around and around continuously, scattering the corn kernels within the dome as they pop.

I think the dome feature is great as it doubles as a popcorn bowl once it has finished, you can take the red lid and cap the vent, and turn it upside down. The vent opening is also a channel for additional ingredients such as butter or seasonings. The pats of butter just melt naturally right onto the popcorn. No fuss, no muss. You pretty much add a small amount of oil, spread a layer of corn kernels all around the open part of the basin, cover with the dome, leave the red lid off (since this is technically an air popper) and plug it in. I did not see an on/off switch. The rod begins to rotate and it begins heating up. Momentarily there is limited action while the unit is still in the process of heating. It can take as many as fifteen to twenty minutes before any real action is heard(so like the old cliché, watched pot does not boil)

Here are a few tips I have learned: Always leave the red lid off the top when heating/popping is going on. At ...

the end of the popping session, I can put my ingredient extras through the open vent which distributes naturally. A thin layer of popcorn kernels is all that is necessary. When I increased the popcorn amount somewhat, it seemed to work against me. Very few kernels made it to the popped stage, and many more burned in the process. I have usually ended up with unpopped kernels more than expected (if it is any more than left with microwave popcorn, it is too many unpopped kernels) So that is why I do not rate this item as highly as I might have normally (It was a thoughtful gift
idea, I will say) I like the bowl/dome feature and I am sure that I can put it to good use; however I may stick to the tried-and-true “skillet” method that works like a charm every time. Hope this info helps someone who has stumbled across this “Stir Crazy “in a catalogue or e-commerce site and thought it was nifty looking, but wonder if it works as well as the old “air poppers” of long ago.

Note: This is the 6 quart version that I have described. There is also an 8 quart version of the Stir Crazy that comes with a square-shaped dome bowl made by Focus Electronics.
