As a fan and frequent watcher of horror films, I was naturally looking forward to this film. As I passed the theater last night, I was stopped in my tracks by the flyer itself. It was an extremely well executed throwback to 1980s campy, horror film posters and it immediately drew me in.

From the very first scene, this movie had already set new standards for independent horror film by laying out a supernatural plot, unencumbered by cliches and jump scares. This movie is subtle and exquisitely paced.

  • The plot is simple: you have sex with someone and pass on a curse. The curse is a being that takes the form of strangers and loved ones. No one else can see them and if they touch you, you’ll die and the being will kill everyone else who had initially been cursed. With that said, the plot itself is heavily defined by sex, but the movie itself, although containing sex scenes, actually is not very reliant on sex. It serves the age old motto: “show me, don’t tell me”.

  • The movie serves subtle hints of 1980s horror by displaying a familiar and nostalgic element of comradery and innocence often lost with 2000s pop culture. The on-screen relationship dynamics are believable and the actors themselves are extremely nuanced and intimate in their approaches. The film itself is frightening. The antagonist, monster-like being that can only walk to its victims, is a shape-shifting presence who’s slowness is the most frightening element of this whole film.

  • The film plays of the psychology of paranoia, as the victims are the only ones who are able to see the monster approaching. This leaves the victims at the whim of the bonds and friendships they’ve created, and as depicted in the film, these friendships are the only form of validation and protection they have. The lead actress Jay does not rely upon the damsel in distress model and is written to be a strong female lead combining the strength of her friendships to stand her ground.

  • This film also features the wealth disparity between Detroit’s 8 mile and the suburbs in a way that is meaningful and poignant. The characters themselves all travel to 8 mile, to the neighborhood pool, with the hopes of destroying the being once and for all. A short monologue delivered by one of the supporting cast members suggests that their being sheltered from 8 mile has aiding in further neglect of the people of 8 mile and the area itself.

  • As mentioned earlier, the invisibility of the monster-like antagonist aids to the fright-factor of this film. The fact that the victim is the only one to see the monster, aids to the unpredictability of the film and the fact that the monster materializes in the form of everyday people also makes this film one of the more eerie films I’ve seen in a while.

I would definitely recommend this film. It may not be available in larger movie theaters however, if you happen to have an independent or smaller movie house, I would definitely consider patronizing that establishment and supporting this film. If you’re a true fan of horror and suspense, you’ll find this film to be refreshing and original. You’ll also find the shots themselves to be experimental at times and the soundtrack by DisasterPeace to be the ultimate 80s throwback.
