I went in expecting this movie to be as funny as its prequel (Dumb and Dumber), which released 20 years ago. It didn’t quite live up to my expectations but nevertheless it was funny. It was extremely ‘dumb’ enough to invoke laughter throughout the film. The film has done extremely well at the box office (topping the North American box office in it’s first weekend with $38,053,000 being raked in). This high figure may have more to do with nostalgia from the first movie, rather than positive word of mouth.

Dumb and Dumber To stars Jim Carrey as Lloyd Christmas and Jeff Daniels as Harry Dunne. Lloyd is in a mental institution due to not being able to attain the woman of his dreams in the first film. He’s been there for 20 years, with only Harry, his best friend, as his visitor. Harry takes care of him, often changing his diapers or changing his urine pouch. Lloyd eventually reveals he was never mentally insane and that for the past 20 years, he’s pretended to be mental as joke on Harry. Later Harry reveals to Lloyd that he’s in need of a kidney, so they go to Harry’s parent’s house to ask his parent’s for a kidney as a genetic match is the only way Harry would survive. Harry finds out he’s adopted but also finds out that he might have daughter, so he and Lloyd attempt to track her down so he can reunite with her and ask for a kidney. They find the child’s mother first, Fraida Fletcher, who eventually gives them the address of the daughter. They have to deal with finding a daughter that may not want anything to do with Harry and obstacles that stand in the way of getting to her including her foster father’s wife, Adele Pinchlow, a woman who craves nothing but money.

This movie stretches the meaning of ‘dumb’ in this movie. For example, Lloyd wasting his life for 20 years so he can play a joke on his friend, is really just him wasting his own life. Another example would be when Harry and Lloyd, having retrieved the address of Harry’s daughter from the daughter’s mother, end up at a different address and see the daughter’s mother again. This confuses them and they somehow mistake the mother for Harry’s daughter.

There is a lot of potty humour and instances in the film that will truly disgust viewers such as when they’ve touched their butts and then end up putting that same hand in each other’s mouth. There are farting games and what generally just amounts to bad hygiene. There is also alot of childish humour such as them building a couch fort. Despite this crude humour, it somehow becomes extremely hilarious. I was laughing so hard in the theatre and so was everyone else. The stupidity of the movie made it a weird but funny movie to watch.

The storyline was ok but could’ve been better. They searched for the daughter throughout the film and it almost seems like they wasted their efforts. So if not for the jokes, what else did people watch the movie for? If it was the story, I feel like I wasted my time.

  • This is the poster for ‘Dumb and Dumber To’.

  • Dumb and Dumber To - Comedy Movie (2014)
  • This is Jim Carrey as Lloyd Christmas. He did a decent job of portraying his character, however in trying to portray a character that’s not very intelligent, he goes overboard and appears to act like a person who has psychological issues. His overboard acting does invoke laughs throughout the film but this could’ve been toned down.

  • This is Jeff Daniels as Harry Dunne. He portrays his character well. He too goes overboard in his portrayal of a dumb person, however he manages to appear as the mature person of the duo (which is not saying much). He does well in portraying a concerned father but doesn’t give any reason as to why he could be a good father (perhaps that was the intention of the movie).

  • Laurie Holden played the role of Adele Pichlow in the film. As an antagonist she did her part well. She portrayed the role of a strong, conniving woman who would do anything for money. Her scorn for Lloyd and Harry was evident from when she met them. I felt like she was careful with what emotions to show, thus she’s given a well rounded performance, with the perfect nuances required for her role.

  • This is Kathleen Turner as Fraida Fletcher. She did a great job in her role. She definitely was able to show that she really loved her daughter and regrets giving her up for adoption. She’s also able to show that she has a wild side and even though she’s older now, she hasn’t given that up. She was refreshing in a movie dominated by over-the-top acting.

  • Dumb and Dumber To - Comedy Movie (2014)
  • This is Rachel Melvin as Penny Pinchlow, Harry’s supposed daughter. Rachel did an average job as Penny but this was simply a case of someone trying too hard. Her portrayal of a person lacking intelligence was more overboard than Harry and Lloyd. She seemed more like a vulnerable child, impressionable to anything rather than simply stupid. However her role was minor, so given that her scope limited, she did an adequate job.

I would recommend this movie but not for the acting or for the story. I recommend this movie for how ‘dumb’ it is. The failures of Lloyd and Harry are sure to get anyone laughing. There are disgusting scenes in the film and quite a bit of potty humour is used as well which may not be ideal for everyone. This will not live up to the expectations you may have based on its prequel but go in with no expectations and you’ll come out laughing.
