  • After going through several pre-paid phone services without saving a significant amount of money for various reasons, I decided to give Spotmobile a try
  • Unfortunately, some of the policies are not
  • Spotmobile uses the T-mobile network, so coverage is rarely an issue and there are no roaming charges
  • The clarity of calls is a bit of a problem, and I often have to listen extra carefully as skipping during calls occurs frequently
  • All in all, Spotmobile has some very reasonable prices for those of us who rarely use our phones because the cost of maintaining a phone number under Spotmobile is extremely low compared to other pre-paid services (5 dollars for 3 months is hard to beat)

After going through several pre-paid phone services without saving a significant amount of money for various reasons, I decided to give Spotmobile a try. It’s been about two years since then and the business has already made noticeable developments. Spotmobile sets itself apart from other pre-paid services in two major ways. First, its variety of options is staggering. There are $5 options that keep your phone number activated for 3 months each, full-blown unlimited data options, and dozens of others in the middle of the two extremes. Second, it uses US dollars (usually cents) as its

entire unit of remaining credit. All calls and texts deplete the balance on your account based on their duration, so no ‘airtime’ information is stored on the account which makes things rather simple.

The customer service center appears to be located right in the US, in Florida, which is a good change from most pre-paid services. I’ve made about 4 calls and the average time spent on hold was about 15 minutes. The staff was very helpful and porting in numbers from other carriers was easy. Unfortunately, some of the policies are not. In particular, Spotmobile

phone numbers that are inactive for other 3 months are automatically deactivated. I was told that reactivation was not possible so I needed to get a new phone number, which is quite an inconvenience. The actual activation process is extremely easy though. All you have to do is buy a $20 sim card (Spotmobile cell phones also available) which will work with any unlocked GSM phone. Pre-paid options can then be refilled and changed quickly on the website for that sim card. Using the cheapest option, I only pay $20 per year after the sim card,

being a minor cell phone user. The actual rate is 10 cents per minute and 5 cents per text (with minutes rounded up). Account balances and airtime can be viewed on the website and by calling into an automated service number, and they give ample warning when an account is about to expire.

Spotmobile uses the T-mobile network, so coverage is rarely an issue and there are no roaming charges. The clarity of calls is a bit of a problem, and I often have to listen extra carefully as skipping during calls occurs frequently. This is most

likely due to the limitations of my 2005 Razr phone rather than the T-mobile network as a whole, though there’s no way to know for sure. All in all, Spotmobile has some very reasonable prices for those of us who rarely use our phones because the cost of maintaining a phone number under Spotmobile is extremely low compared to other pre-paid services (5 dollars for 3 months is hard to beat). The website was recently redesigned so account management is easily done, and the voice clarity when calling is acceptable. I’ll be using it for quite a while longer.
