  • Since then I’ve seen him in movies such as “On the Road”, “Hildalgo” and “Eastern Promises” and I’ve never been disappointed with the way that he plays his characters
  • Perhaps my only regret is that Mortensen didn’t get his role as Aragorn when he was a little younger, so that age might not have prevented him from getting certain opportunities
  • The thing with Viggo is that he seemed to have a very interesting childhood
  • A part from the movies in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, one of my favourite roles that Viggo played was Nikolai, a man who works for the Russian mob in the movie Eastern Promises
  • Mortensen’s lack of consistency when it comes to his roles are one of the reasons why I believe that he has failed to win more Oscars and other more popular film awards

My interest in the actor Viggo Mortensen materialised after I had seen him many years ago in the first “Lord of the Rings” movie. Before that I had never even heard of him, but it was his performance in the trilogy as the hero Aragorn that made me wonder what he would be like in other roles. Since then I’ve seen him in movies such as “On the Road”, “Hildalgo” and “Eastern Promises” and I’ve never been disappointed with the way that he plays his characters. Perhaps my only regret is that Mortensen didn’t get his role as Aragorn when he was a little younger, so that age might not have prevented him from getting certain opportunities.

The thing with Viggo is that he seemed to have a very interesting childhood. I remember when I searched for him on the

internet for the first time, I read that he could speak several languages which included Spanish, Danish, Norwegian, Italian and English. I attribute that to his history, since I also read at the time that he spent his childhood in several places, which included Denmark, Argentina and the United States.

A part from the movies in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, one of my favourite roles that Viggo played was Nikolai, a man who works for the Russian mob in the movie Eastern Promises. He was nominated for many awards, and the movie itself received many positive reviews. What I loved about Mortensen’s performance in particular was that it was different from the other movies that I had seen him. I always knew that he was a good actor, but he brought a certain life to his character

that made the movie a lot more powerful and riveting. I especially loved the fight scene in the bathhouse with Nikolai’s character. It was one of the things that made the movie a little more shocking and suspenseful.

While he had a few good and popular roles, years later I see no indication that Mortensen might make it to the A-list or get his proper pick of roles. Instead his roles these days mostly seem to consist of some less popular foreign movies. While that might be his choice, especially since he has been with a Spanish born actress since 2009, one still cannot ignore the fact that there is a two year gap in his body of work right between “Everybody has A Plan” and “The Two Faces of January”. If the turn that his career ...

has taken really isn’t his choice, it might have been as a result of the age that he was when he finally got his break-out role in Lord of the Rings; or it could have been the fact that Hollywood tends to be a bit fickle when it comes to people. Therefore, something as trivial as the success of the last movie he was in might have contributed to his continued success.

One thing that I’ve always loved about this actor is that I know almost nothing about his personal life, a part from relevant information that might or might not be used to get him roles. There are no “blind vices” about him or “drops of tea” on the internet, which doesn’t necessarily mean that he either has no dirty laundry or he’s completely irrelevant to most

people, but he’s very careful about what the rest of the world sees. That’s fine with me since I really don’t believe one should air their dirty laundry, especially since it really affects the way people think of you and distorts their respect.

Mortensen’s lack of consistency when it comes to his roles are one of the reasons why I believe that he has failed to win more Oscars and other more popular film awards. It has absolutely nothing to do with his acting since it has been proven time and again that he’s capable of an award winning performance. It’s going to be hard and downright impossible, but I really wish he would try getting back into the loop. His potential is not one that should be wasted, and I really think that some of his fellow actors deserve more competition.
