  • I might not see her in many movies now, especially after her shoplifting stunt a couple of years ago but once upon a time, Winona Ryder was one of my favourite actors
  • One of the many things that makes this movie immortal is the plot, which I thought was very dark and yet so interesting and relatable
  • I’ve known at least six people like Heather Chandler throughout my life so far and as horrible as it sounds, I know what Veronica must have felt like wanting to get rid of her
  • One of them seemed to take pleasure in bullying me and making my life even more miserable, and I was unfortunately stupid and lonely enough to be in a group of “mean girls” lead by another
  • The movie was truly something else, and I would encourage people who watched and enjoyed “Mean Girls”, “Clique” and “Jawbreaker” to see it since it falls in a similar category

I might not see her in many movies now, especially after her shoplifting stunt a couple of years ago but once upon a time, Winona Ryder was one of my favourite actors. I especially liked a couple of her films from the eighties, some of which I could watch repeatedly over the years, my enjoyment of them never diminishing for some reason. One of these movies was called “Heathers”.

I’m not sure whether to refer to Heathers as a teen coming of age film but I can tell you that it’s in the same league as the movies “Mean Girls”, “Jawbreaker” and “Clique”. They might not have been staggeringly successful one their release, but they have garnered a certain

sort of popularity and fans. The movie revolves around the apparent “suicide” of a well known mean girl Heather Chandler. However, what no one knows is that she was actually poisoned by Veronica Sawyer and her new boyfriend JD, who disguised it as a hangover cure. Their relief and amusement over Heather’s death is soon short lived when the fake suicide note they wrote for her turns Heather into a form of celebrity and a tortured soul.

One of the many things that makes this movie immortal is the plot, which I thought was very dark and yet so interesting and relatable. I’ve known at least six people like Heather Chandler throughout my life so far and as horrible as it sounds, I know what Veronica must have felt like wanting to get rid of her. One of them seemed to take pleasure in bullying me and making my life even more miserable, and I was unfortunately stupid and lonely enough to be in a group of “mean girls” lead by another. I would never excuse what Veronica and JD did, but that doesn’t mean that girls like Heather Chandler don’t make people’s lives much harder.

The very poisonous relationship between Veronica and JD made the plot even more interesting, so watching them was like viewing a rich teen 80s Bonnie and Clyde, where Clyde had a few more manipulative and psychotic tendencies.

The acting in this movie was ...

quite good as well. I thought that the actress, Kim Walker who played the leader of the Heathers did a fairly good job portraying her character as a cold-hearted despicable person despite her youth. I was distressed to see that an actress who was so talented died at such a young age, and was not even able to gain better roles in better movies that would showcase her talent.

Winona Ryder played the part of Veronica fairly well too and brought a certain life to the movie and her character that I don’t think anyone else could have done. However, the one who impressed me the most was Christian Slater who played Veronica’s psychopath boyfriend JD. I thought that he

played JD well since you could see that there was something off and chilling about him the moment he appeared on screen for the first time, even though he didn’t do or say much then, and I definitely knew when he calmly pulled a gun at one of the jocks who attempted to torment him. The maturity he possessed for his age made his character even more chilling. Nevertheless his character was still charming enough where you could see why Veronica was attracted to him and the darkness that he possessed.

The movie was truly something else, and I would encourage people who watched and enjoyed “Mean Girls”, “Clique” and “Jawbreaker” to see it since it falls in a similar category.
