Birdemic: Shock and Terror had to have been made for cult status purposes. I mean come on why would anyone made a movie with birds that spit acid and shoot lasers…or I think they are lasers. The movie has crappy violence, early 90s PC game dialogue, and children who are hungry every two minutes. Birdemic is awesome.

The movie is described as a romantic thriller….hahahahaha. Oh man I’m sorry I think I just lost my sanity over the usage of romantic thriller with Birdemic. As far fetched as it might seem I can see this, since the first half of the movie is a bad love story between Rod (Alan Bagh), a software salesman, and Nathalie (Whitney Moore), a model who just took some pictures and now is a Victoria Secret cover model. See, love is in the air between these two leading characters and Nathalie’s mother pretty much tells her to stick with him because he has/will always have money, modeling just doesn’t cut it the entire life. Fantastic writing but this is only the beginning of what could be the best crappy movie of all time.

After a night of some hankie pinkie, Rod and Nathalie are stuck inside of a hotel room with birds outside, attacking like…birds. The two

do manage to get outside, head next door to meet up with another couple. Now armed with coat hangers, the four head out to a van, locked and loaded with two fake funs, one being a Guncom painted black. It is just full blown chaos and the van is a rolling fortress of pain!

How bad is this movie? There is way too much sound dubbing and it is done real poorly. It seems like a child got bored one day, took mommy and daddies camcorder and made a movie. But that isn’t the case since James Nguyen, the films writer and director, is a full grown man, who actually spent all his money to make this movie. Got to give him some credit there, but this movie is not a good example of how a movie should be. That is what gives Birdemic: Shock and Terror its charm though, at least for me, because it is so goddamn bad, it’s good. Taking this movie and something series from Hollywood will only make you turn it off after Rod gets his menu at the restaurant.

All of the birds in the movie look like they were ripped from Internet .gif files. Anytime a bird gets shot it’s always from the same spot and they all move the same. Birdemic also fails when it comes to the usage of a green screen. It is pretty bad when they use it and some points in the movie, when a green screen was used, I don’t understand what they were really thinking. All of the gore in the movie is kept to looking like crap, when people die you can see them still breathing/moving, and markings, caused by the birds, never look the same on characters.

What else does this movie have? Random dancing in a family restaurant with somebody singing on a table (he is lip synching to his own song too, poorly done), a first time meeting with a family member that sounds like an interview process, worst sex scene in history, a grown man changing his profession in the middle of a conversation, and about a thousand moments when global warming is brought up.

Nobody can act in this movie, maybe when Alan Bagh says “she is taking a shit”. Well I guess I shouldn’t be too mean, Whitney Moore does seem to do most of the acting while everyone else is an idiot. Wait a second how could I forget about the true hugger, a random guy living in a tree house in ...

the woods. He gives us a speech on global warming so I have to give him credit just because he is so bad it makes him great….There is another person I forgot about. The teenage white boy wearing an Eazy-E t-shirt. His acting, when getting acid dumped on him from the birds, is Oscar worthy.

Birdemic is presented in its 1.78:1 video glory. I don’t know what James Nguyen is smoking when he states in an extra, that his movie was shot at 1080p, because this blu-ray looks like shit. There is a lot of sound from the picture and there is always a fine layer of graininess. The movie looks like an old home video from a betamax cassette. A little better than VHS but why would you want to be compared to a betamax cassette?

Presented in lossless DTS-HD Master Audio, Birdemic: Shock and Terror sounds pretty bad. But wait a second, this is done in lossless audio, how can is sound bad? It just does. Trying to hear the actors is really hard and I mean it. The only thing that can be heard real good are the birds making their noises and the gunshots. Those two factors are in lossless audio that is all.

      When it comes to extras

Birdemic has more than you’d think. The audio commentary track with director, writer James Nguyen is just him talking about global warming and how much he loves Whitney Moore. The second audio commentary track is a classic. It features Whitney Moore and Alan Bagh and they pretty much talk about everything in the movie. These two dig deep and talk about even the smallest aspects of the movie. This track needs to be heard by movie lovers and Birdemic fans.

There are two minutes worth of deleted scenes and two shorts about the movie. Pretty interesting extras and worth a watch, trust me. The rest of the extras consist of trailers and a press kit. Overall this is an impressive list of extras on a first run of a movie. Most films get this kind of treatment during the second of third releases.

Birdemic: Shock and Terror is a terrible movie. It is poorly made, the acting is trash, and the concept is just damn right ludicrous. For some reason though, with all that terrible stuff in this movie, I love it! This movie is a must own and it should be watched in groups! Grab yourself a nice cold beverage and watch what is the best crappy movie of all time.
