  • This is a small part of the film I found unique and completely new
  • What’s more interesting is near the end of the film when Saya actually reveals she is truly “different” from everyone else

Blood: The Last Vampire offers wonderful animation, grisly action, and an awesome main character, but lacks in overall length and depth of what truly could have been a perfect title. Saya is on the hunt for chiropterans, vampire-like demons that are wreaking havoc on a military base in Japan. They live off human blood completely draining their victims until death. Did I mention that Saya is a katana-wielding badass that shows no mercy for these grotesque beasts?

Set in 1966, a U.S. government organization called Red Shield is on the hunt for these monsters. Saya is called in because she is one

of the only known killers of these creatures. Backed by an agent named David, she tracks down the remaining demons to rid the world of their existence.

Let me just say that this anime was awesome. Released almost 14 years ago, Blood: The Last Vampire offers detailed and graphic horror with great voice acting. The film offers exceptional hand-drawn animation mixed with some 3D effects. One of the most unique features I can say I have only seen in this film was the language transition between English and Japanese. As the film takes place in Japan, many of the Japanese characters speak Japanese to one another but speak English to the American characters and vice versa. This is a small part of the film I found unique and completely new.

For what was offered, the characters and enemies were fairly appealing. Saya is known to be one of the last remaining vampires of her kind, and possesses great strength and knowledge for looking a young age. The chiropterans are very creepy, too. Watching them change from their human façade to their true form was disturbing and will entice horror fans alike. What’s more interesting is near the end of the film when Saya actually ...

reveals she is truly “different” from everyone else.

I have to also mention that there was plenty of action here. With humans and demons being slaughtered, this film offers sword action, dismembered bodies, and all the blood you could hope for.

I have to say that I was rather disappointed in the length of the overall feature running at only 48 minutes. For a film of this much potential, I would have preferred at least an hour. The viewer was literally thrown into a cool introduction with no clue of who is who or what is what. This left the story shallow with

no historical background or much characterization. Up until the end was the viewer open to a new set of questions that were still left unanswered.

If you are a vampire or horror fan, this is a perfect choice for an animated feature. I found the voice acting and action to be high quality, but found the film too short. This left an underdeveloped story and character leaving the viewer wanting more. If you expect too much, you might be left disappointed. Despite some minor complaints, I have to say that the good significantly outweighs the bad. This is a highly recommended feature nonetheless.
