When this restaurant first opened in downtown Savannah first opened, it was a new hotspot for Mexican food because they offered creative dishes at moderate prices in a convenient location. Since then, they’ve gotten some competition, but they remain one of the best Mexican restaurants in the city.
Cilantro’s has an excellent location on Bay Street which makes it very near to the City Market area as well as River Street. Parking can be a hassle because Bay Street is often busy and has off and on street parking, but there is a garage nearby in Ellis Square if you
can’t find parking. I like that it’s within walking distance to a lot of shops and bars to make a night of having dinner here.
Inside Cilantro’s, there is an open bar and seating area filled with flat screen TVs perfect for watching sports. I’ve watched soccer games here before, and it’s the ideal atmosphere to sit at the high top tables and switch from the game to people watching out the large glass windows that look out to the street. Back behind the host stand, there is ample seating (booths and tables) that is arranged in a way
to make more intimate areas as opposed to a large seating area. I like that I don’t feel like I’m sitting in the middle of a giant open space like I do at many of the other Mexican restaurants in town.
This restaurant serves a bit fancier Mexican dishes than competitors in Savannah like Juarez and Carlito’s. Chipotle mashed potatoes and mahi mahi tacos are two of my favorite menu items, and the poblamos get an upscale spin with piquadillo and specialty cheeses.
