Captain Jack Sparrow returned triumphantly in his full 3D glory after some absence from the big screen. The cheerful and joyous captain who still goes by without a ship, is causing a terrible havoc in central London, while trying to rescue his best friend Gibbs from the gallows. This attracts the attention of the king who wants to hire Jack to guide an expedition in search of the fountain of youth.
Jack was surprised to discover that his former partner Captain Barbossa (no longer with two legs) became a privateer for the King, and is very angered by the news that his beloved Pearl was submerged. Fate faces more old friends in the face of the firy and dangerous Angelica, which along with
the legendary Captain Edward Teach Blackbeard is also seeking the Fountain of Youth. The question is not, however, just who will go first, because to get the benefits of the spring, you have to pass a number of tests.
I think that the story is definitely the weakest element of the fourth part of the pirate saga. Search for the fountain, the love story between Jack and Angelica, vow for revenge against Blackbeard by Barbossa and even the love story of a priest and a mermaid are stories that can easily fill a whole separate film and all of them are present in this one film. They leave very little breathing room for any of the plot lines and the film suffers from this.
I really would like to know more about the zombies that Blackbeard has created to manage his ship, but they have very little and forgettable presence. One scene involves Jack and Captain Barbossa in a fight for treasure on a ship hanging over a giant chasm - their every step changes dangerously the balance.
Alas, and this scene is not developed to its full potential. I feel that mostly suffer the image of Blackbeard, who definitely showed incredible, but also unrealized potential for a great and memorable villain. However, the impressive chase through the streets of London at the beginning of the movie, the clash with incredibly beautiful but deadly mermaids (big improvement after the mucous puppets of Davy Jones) and many, still inspiring ...
I was a bit skeptic when I found out they were going to continue the franchise after the original trilogy. I was pleasantly surprised, but with a few grievances.
I did enjoy this movie. Although, I felt like Jack Sparrow hasn’t grown at all. He is still the lucky idiot/goofball who doesn’t use any skill to get out of any scenarios whatsoever.
It was pretty cool to see the Spanish entering into the film. I feel like the producers could definitely keep the Spanish around to become a good side character in the series, but they already did that..
It was heartwarming to see Barbossa come back and make something out of himself. Go from a pirate to a captain in a navy, albeit a rough around the edges type.
The story is… interesting. I felt no remorse for many of the characters. They were just kind of thrown in there. No character development or anything like that.
3/5 stars.
