Of all the movies about superheroes I think that Captain America is the most difficult in terms of obstacles to overcome. The mythical origin of Thor, the wealthy luxury and fussiness of Tony Stark, the early wrestling appearances by Peter Parker, who is trying to impress the audience that is awaiting spectacles - all these are good explanations for their pretty fantastic and sometimes quite crazy costumes. Perfectly acceptable explanations (yes, even wrestling). The costume of Captain America, however, even in the original comic books was a pure form of propaganda. Can such a vivid image of American patriotism and propaganda of the 40s shine on the big screen without appearing totally frivolous and even funny?

Yes, actually, it can. The young , short and skinny asthmatic Steve Rogers for the fifth time already has applied to join the army and go to the front

of the Second World War. Each time , for obvious reasons, his desire is denied. One scientist , however, notices his vigor and enthusiasm , and decides to give him a chance in a special division of soldiers fighting a different war front. While he fails permanently in the physical training exercises, Steve continues to amaze with his courage, intellect and will. It is these qualities that put him on the top shelf of a secret project to create a new generation of super soldiers.

The experiment is successful and Steve is now much taller and many times stronger and faster than before. A tragic accident makes him the only one of the super soldier program. The newly appeared Captain America will have to summon all his amazing new skills to defeat the evil German scientist known as the Red Skull and his splinter Reich organization Hydra , which wants to destroy the world. I think that what is in the heart of the success of Captain America is neither the dry, yet always fresh, funny humor of Tommy Lee Jones as the gruff old colonel, nor it is the implemented with fantastic computer-generated effects battles and skirmishes.

My opinion is that the success is due to how real everything is made to look. Hugo Weaving turns Red Skull from a potential laughingstock to a dangerous super-villain and I think that Chris Evans manages to raise the image of Rodgers and the Captain over the propaganda - despite his name, Captain America is not only protector of his fellow citizens, but all who suffer from injustice in the world. He does not have bad feelings only towards the Nazis - his enemies are all the bullies and the ...

oppressors. It is these beliefs that are the main focus, as the patriotic American aspect is twisted in a very satirical and brilliant way to provide a plausible explanation for his costume and I did not expect to ever get such. I will not spoil the pleasure for those who have not seen it, to see how this miracle was achieved . His character does not develop much, especially his views on life remain unchanged, but this is still a story of his origin, so that’s forgivable, I think.

I feel that the effects are really at a blockbuster level, especially the skirmish between the Captain and the Nazis are an eye candy (how and when Steve learned to use the shield like a boomerang was not revealed, however). I think that an impressive effect was the transformation of Steve - his skinny version of

the beginning of the film is entirely CGI. Sometimes the situation seems a bit too futuristic for the 40, but overall the atmosphere and tone were kept, and I thought that mostly at his place seemed Howard Stark. Stan Lee, as always , appeared briefly in a really small role to bless the Captain, and Samuel L. Jackson makes the necessary appearance.

With a little grind here and there, Captain America could be a real gem among comic book movies. Instead, I think that its full brilliance remains small in the shadow of The Avengers. This does not prevent , however, for me to enjoy this blockbuster of a movie with a satisfying amount of action , humor and zeal - and especially the small miracle to turn American patriotism into something that can be taken by heart even by people who are not Americans, as well.

Azriel says :

I was not a fan of Captain America, not when it was only a comic book character and not more so in my younger days cartoon series. But given the opportunity I took my chance and watched this movie, and I am glad that I did because Captain America sure did not disappoint many of the movie goers. It was funny from the start, kind of really cute too as he became a ranger so ready for a battle. This movie did a great job introducing the roots of steve rogers but was a little too sad when he plunged into the sea leaving us movie goers some more Hope for a sequel to wait for.
