Fire Pro Wrestling is a game series that dates back as far as Japan’s Super Famicom, the country’s version of the Super Nintendo. Thanks to a wealth of imported titles, the series has developed a following in the States. In 2001, the Game Boy Advance was given a release. But in 2005, the series was given an entry on the PlayStation 2. If you missed out on both, its available for download on the PS3 console store.

Fire Pro Wrestling has a roster that dwarfs other wrestling video games. Because of licensing issues, real world wrestlers

were included, but given fake names. Wrestling fans will clearly recognize such big names as Vader, Andre the Giant, Rick Steiner, Ken Shamrock, Great Muta, Ultimo Dragon, Sting, and several dozen others. You can also create another 500 wrestlers, making this the largest roster in a wrestling video game.

The match options are decent as well. You can play single and tag team. There are elimination bouts with as many as eight guys in the ring at once. The game’s most unique mode is the barb wire, C-4 detonation ring, much like the one in the classic bout between Cactus Jack and Terry Funk.

The controls of the game are much different from other titles. The grappling system is nothing like AKI or Yuke’s. Instead of button combinations, your timing is the key to pulling off moves. The learning curve is strict and will require much practice. After much trial and error, you’ll have the controls down well enough that you’ll win matches.

Despite being on high-grade systems, the graphics keep that 16-bit look. The models of the wrestlers have that Super Nintendo look to them, which homages the series. Despite having ...

eight guys in the ring at once, there was no problem with the frame rate. Entrances were brief, but still very amusing.

While there is menu music and in-match music, the entrance themes matter above other tracks. Some of the tracks were clearly inspired by real tracks like “Offspring’s “Come Out and Play”, Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger”, Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song”, Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man”, and Da Rude’s “Sandstorm”. Even some WWF themes for Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Hulk Hogan, and Triple H are given re-arrangement for the game. Classical music fans will appreciate

that “New World Symphony”, “Night on Bald Mountain”, and “Carmen” appear on the theme song list.

If you’re a wrestling fan and want a change of pace from the recent offerings from Yuke’s, download this title for your PS3. The roster and create-a-wrestler will allow you to match your own dream matches come true. You have different match types to choose from. All you’ll need is patience for the control scheme. If this game was your first exposure to the series, like it was for me, this is the best game to start with and easy to find.
