I can not say that my first contact with Haruki Murakami and “Dance , dance , dance” left me with a good impression of the Japanese author. But the book with a startling headline “Hard Boiled Wonderland And The End Of The World” completely changed my mind for the author and his works.

The characters in the novel do not have any kind of names, they are also not much, and their world is only vaguely shaded - almost real, but also not quite. In the center is a man

with a quiet life, having a collection of whiskey and a fondness for old Hollywood movies. His profession is kalkutech, generally speaking he processes in his brain data that must be protected from tampering. This ability takes him to the Tokyo sewer system where a wacky professor does amazing experiments and after awhile it turns out that kalkutech itself is the subject of one. Together with the daughter of the scientist he must get out of a rival organization that wants to get its hands on the professor’s work.

In parallel his self starts living in a mysterious town at the Edge of the world. It is surrounded by an impenetrable wall, the residents live a maddeningly quiet life, undisturbed by anything but the biggest problem is that the hero has to be divided with his shadow. The purpose of his stay - the reading old dreams stored in the skulls of unicorns.

The two worlds are one. I can say nothing more regarding the action of the novel. Even coming end of the world .

      In this novel,

Murakami ’s prose can only be praised. It runs lightly, smoothly, constantly makes you go back and reread whole paragraphs of the book. A greatly shaped content in which three words can mark an entire chapter. For example Chapter 9 is called “Appetite, disappointment, Leningrad .” At first glance - I thought to myself what the hell? But along several pages the hero meets a beautiful librarian, that is destroying everything that he has cooked ( appetite), subsequently failed to proove himself well in bed ( disappointment ) , and finally learns
of the studies regarding Petersburg / Leningrad scientists on discoverd remains of unicorns ( Leningrad ) . I liked it , definitely .

A colleague of mine feels pretty strongly and he has a point that the book is full of symbols and references , but I am in a state of holiday relaxation, so I ‘ve read the novel with a light tone, not about trying to treat it in any complex realms of the mind. It is your choice to head in another direction if you would like it.
