  • And the Firaxis product Enemy Within is the best proof of that statement
  • Just because of these I think that it is worth it to buy the new package, though Slingshot is not anything special, and Soldier Pack only contains clothes and hairstyles
  • When you fight with several types, such as the giant Muton or the sinister Floater, however Stalker will definitely create for you more than one or two problems at the same time will increase the tensions between the moves
  • In this way you can happily adorn with honors your favourite soldier and suffer further when you lose him
  • Either way , however, the gameplay is almost close to perfection and even small graphical glitches do not hinder the great experience that gives this title

Is it possible to improve an almost perfect game? As strange as it sounds nowadays such a statement - the answer is actually yes. And the Firaxis product “Enemy Within” is the best proof of that statement.

As many people no doubt know, this is a standalone expansion pack for XCOM Enemy Unknown. It is practically the same game, but with a hell of a lot of improvements and additions. The Commander Edition includes Elite Soldier Pack, Second Wave, Slingshot and even Progeny. Just because of these I think that it is worth it to buy the new package, though Slingshot is not anything special, and Soldier Pack only contains clothes and hairstyles. The options to modify the difficulty of Second Wave, however, are more than just good. Meanwhile Enemy Within is something much more than the well-known editions “Game of the Year.” In it we find a new resource , another rival faction , several new mission types , additional area and many scary aliens. As a result of this the expansion does not only improve the story but also introduces new elements which differentiate the gameplay more.

The difficulty level is significantly increased. To some extent this is due to the inclusion of Stalker - a stealth-based opponent who becomes invisible, infiltrates your soldiers and chokes them to death. Fortunately, you can easily counter him by placing a member of the team in Overwatch. When you fight with several

types, such as the giant Muton or the sinister Floater, however Stalker will definitely create for you more than one or two problems at the same time will increase the tensions between the moves.

The basic story is the same. Virtually there is no new storyline . On the one hand , you lead your headquarters , and on the other - you manage your troops on the battlefield. Both aspects of the gameplay , however, are improved. During the fighting your team receives medals that you can distribute as you see fit . Each of them provides a small , yet significant buff to productivity . In this way you can happily adorn with honors your favourite soldier and suffer further when you lose him.

No changes have been made in the development of the four major classes . In Enemy Within, however, you can customize your soldiers in several new ways. In Enemy Unknown you had the opportunity to send them to the PSI tests. In Enemy Within , you can build a genetics laboratory and workshop of Cybernetics . Thanks to them you will modify and improve the team even more. Once you learn the proper research project , for example , you can send someone to the workshop where he will be converted into a real cyborg and put on one of the so-called MEC costumes. In practice he will become a kind of a tank in

itself, absorbing much of the damage.

The MEC soldiers ( There are four classes based on the original specialization of soldiers) move and act like any other Unit on the battlefield. But they can not cover themselves. They are generally indispensable when it comes to some of the missions, such as the so-called Terror or those related to kidnapping. At other times , however, it is best to keep them in your base if you want to keep them alive longer. Yes , they are much more flexible and effective in battle, but also the easy prey for the aggressive and really impressive AI of the opponents.

All these new upgrades and improvements are possible thanks to the new resource called MELD. This is an alien substance (partly organic , partly nanotechnology ) that allows your soldiers to be improved in various ways. The example already mentioned is the so-called MEC costumes. If you want , however , you can strengthen their skin or improve their ability to aim. Why not turn them into a real chameleon , thanks to which they will become invisible?

MELD can be found at different locations. Its durability , however, is usually only about five moves. On the one hand , the resource can be obtained from your soldier. On the other - if you run a successful mission before this restriction you will take to the base everything else that is left on the field.

One box usually gives you 10 MELD. Things for which you will spend them, are not that much expensive. Its real goal, however, is to make you think at any meeting with the aliens. When you know what it does and what it is used you will hardly be able to resist it. The limited stay on the battlefield will often make you take risks in your desire to get your hands on it.

Yes, Enemy Within allows you to improve your troops in a variety of new ways. Note, however, that the enemy is more dangerous than ever. The new places, however, have been created to test your skills to the limit - most places for hiding are scattered for example. The same goes for additional missions such as Site Recon, where you need to go in civilian areas and discover what caused the local slaughter.

The last major innovation in Enemy Within is the organization Exalt. To some extent it resembles The Bureau. It involves people who share the technology of XCOM, but not their ethics. Occasionally agents of Exalt will appear on the battlefield to create a slightly different conflict. They move well and cause severe damage, but are weak and susceptible to critical strikes. That’s why they come in large groups. At a certain stage of the campaign you will be able to scan the world for signs of Exalt. Subsequently, you will be able to send

your own undercover agent from one of your soldiers. After a few days you will find out if his mission was successful or not. In most cases you will need to send a team to evacuate him. These tasks are among some of the best innovations in Enemy Within - the feeling that you’re going with a mission to save one of your faithful companions from the clutches of the enemy, is really cool.

Perhaps the only complaint I have of this game , as far as it can be called a complaint, is that even on Normal Enemy Within is really difficult . I really think that the players who have had dealings with Enemy Unknown, will find the expansion significantly challenging . Either way , however, the gameplay is almost close to perfection and even small graphical glitches do not hinder the great experience that gives this title.
