The oldest as such in the arena of IM yet the newest messenger on the android platform was awaited by millions for quite some time now. So after having used it for couple of days now, I thought to myself if the wait was really worth it. Well let’s understand the difference between a Whatsapp and a BBM

      1) There is no read receipt on Whatsapp but you can find this feature on BBM - but if you ask me it doesn’t matter much except in case of certain urgent

      msgs.

      2) Whatsapp’s interface is quite simple and attractive whereas BBM tries to group messages from one user if sent in a continuous flow - Good at times to see all the messages in an entirety but again depends on the user, how comfortable he is.

      3) The colour scheme of BBM doesn’t quite suit the android phones. Again a personal choice, but I definitely think they have huge scope of improvement there. Whatsapp also allows you to change the wallpaper allowing you to add some tinge of newness to it.

      4) The updates section in BBM definitely is a differentiator as you love to see what people have to update about - in an uncluttered way unlike Facebook.

      5) But again when it comes to other features for example attachments you can attach pictures, location, contact, audio, video, etc but on BBM It’s just pictures and audio. Also the quality of the attachment is quite poor in BBM.

      6) Ping is a nice feature but again of much less utility - I can still do away without it.

      Of course ...

you must be wondering how can I not mention about the most significant difference which is the BBM pin - my Facebook account is flooded with posts on the BBM pin. So the one really good feature in terms of security, quite ironically has been received as a pain. Unlike Whatsapp where you just add person to your contacts and he/she would appear on the Whatsapp list, on BBM you need to send your pin or request their pin. But going by the way people have shared it on social
media websites it seems no one gives a damn about security. They just want the ease of use. And of course if you have more than 500 contacts it’s going to be a pain sharing it with each one of them individually. They need to understand the changing consumer behaviour. Otherwise they would be left far behind.

So coming to the topic - was it really worth the wait - I would say definitely not. There is nothing substantial that BBM gives it’s users in terms of messaging experience, so why wait for it…. Enjoy whatsapping…..
