Saigon is a pretty big city. Modern buildings are scattered almost everywhere. But they are not exactly what I wanted to see. As a tourist, I expected to see historical buildings, try local foods, and buy some souvenirs, etc.

Thanks to Pham Ngu Lao St for its location as almost everything a tourist needs in Saigon is just right there or only a few minutes away from this place. Most coaches from and to other cities (and countries) pass through this street. I arrived in Saigon by coach from Phnom Penh

(Cambodia), and alighted in Pham Ngu Lao right in the opposite of my hotel.

Taxi stand is also there along the northern side of the street. But I only used their service once when I had to go to the airport at the end of my stay in Saigon. In this area, I could easily find a money changer that was still in operation after 10 pm.

But I do not recommend using their service as the rate was not that good. You can find other nearby money changers offering better rates during office hours instead. There is also a 24 hour small shop selling bread and bottled water.

Near the west end, there is a noodle shop. They sell various delicious noodle dishes for 50k dong (US $ 2. 50) each.

In the morning there is a bread seller using a stroller. For 15k dong you can have much better breakfast than that provided by your backpacker hotel. Tour operators are also there along this street where you can book a trip within the city or outside.

I booked two trips to ...

      • Pham Ngu Lao Street, Saigon
Mekong Delta and Cuchi Tunnel through one tour operator based in 203 Pham Ngu Lao St. But do not book any city tour through a tour operator, as they are overcharged. As far as the tourist spot is concerned, Saigon has a few places such as the General Post Office, Notredame Cathedral, Reunification Palace, Ho Chi Minh Museum, and the Opera House.

There is also Ben Thanh market where you can buy some souvenirs. The best money changer is also located just outside this market. To get to these places, I

did not need any public transportation as all of them are within walking distance from my hotel.

The best time to visit Saigon is within a week preceding the Chinese New Year (or Tet Holiday in Vietnamese). A huge park along the northern side of Pham Ngu Lao St will be fully decorated with beautiful flowers. If you stay in one of the hotels (mostly low cost ones) in Pham Ngu Lao St, you will be in the best location in Saigon for money changers, good foods, souvenir shops, city center tourist spots, tour operators, and public transportation.
