“Makeup To Breakup” is the autobiography from original Kiss drummer Peter Criss. I have read many rockstar autobiographies so far, and I think this one might be my favourite. Collaborating with Larry “Ratso” Sloman, Peter Criss gives a very honest account describing his childhood years when he was only known as Peter Criscuola, and his trouble-filled teen years where he participated in local, rebellious gangs in the streets of New York. He also describes what it was like joining Kiss and becoming the “Catman” in one

of the biggest rock bands in the world to the shattering fall out between himself and the other band members.

One of the things I appreciate most about this autobiography, is the clear honesty shown throughout the entire book. Peter Criss tells of not only the good parts of his life, but also all of the bad experiences. He talks about his past drug use, contemplating suicide, and relationship and marriage issues he faced. He tells of tales that most people would rather not tell about themselves which I admired. Kiss fans will find this book eye-opening as Criss explains how he was treated in the band and tells some rather amusing and shocking stories. I think one story Kiss fans will be surprised at, is the story Criss recounts about bedroom antics with former Kiss band mate, Ace Frehley.

From reading “Makeup To Breakup”, it’s clear to see that there’s still a lot of bitterness between this famous “Catman” and his former Kiss band mates and management. He ...

describes Gene Simmons as “greedy” and tells lots of less than flattering tales about him and lead singer, Paul Stanley. Even his best friend in the band, Ace Frehley is accused of “betraying” Peter Criss on one of the later tours over money. Some of these stories may shock Kiss fans and may even make them think differently about some of the band members.

One particularly touching story, was when Peter Criss talks about his battle against breast cancer. He gives a detailed insight into

the feelings and emotions he experienced during one of the most difficult times of his life. He then goes on to describe what it was like when he found out his current wife, Gigi also had cancer. This was a very inspiring and heartfelt part of the book, with Criss explaining how important it is to create awareness for this disease, especially for men.

Overall, “Makeup To Breakup” was very well written, insightful and entertaining. It’s a must read for any fan of Peter Criss and the band Kiss.
