Lately, I’ve been spending more and more time playing Despicable Me: Minion Rush on my phone. As the title says, it’s a tie-in to the Despicable Me animated film sequel that’s playing in theaters now. It’s another endless-runner game, but thanks to the use of the adorable yellow minions as avatars and a healthy mix of elements taken from other casual games, Minion Rush is definitely a must-try. Besides, it’s free to download.

This endless-runner game makes use of the standard controls. Swiping left or right allows you to switch lanes, of which there are three. Swiping downward lets the minion slide under obstacles, while swiping up makes the little

critter jump over cars and streams of water, among other things.

You run through Gru’s lab or the neighborhood as you go along, and the obstacles—buses, cars, bombs, tubes, et cetera—get harder at longer distances. There are also some goals set by some of the movie characters, and accomplishing them increases your starting Despicable Multiplier. Some missions also add variety to the game, like the Vector Battle that pits you against the original movie’s antagonist and makes for a nice change of pace.

You get power-ups randomly as you play, a la Temple Run. There’s the Freeze Ray, which freezes obstacles so you can simply run over them. There’s also Gru’s rocket, which lets you cover a good amount of distance via flight. You have the vacuum to easily gather bananas on the path, the banana splitter to make each banana worth two for a set duration, and the Mega Minion power-up to make you bigger, allowing the minion to just stomp obstacles and collect fellow minions easily.

My favorite power-up is the Fluffy Unicorn, which sends you into a mini-game similar to Mega Jump. Basically, you get to jump up with the unicorn as long as you collect bananas, so you can easily make it to the top with simple tilting action. It’s a great way to collect bananas to ...

purchase new costumes or to level-up your power-ups.

Speaking of new costumes, collecting the various types available adds to the fun of playing the game. Some can simply be purchased using the bananas you collect in the game, but some of the fancier ones are only available using a large amount of Gru tokens, which require actual cash purchases in-game. You do get some small amount of tokens as you play, but they’re not nearly enough to get costumes like the Firefighter, Ninja, or the Maid. Some are only available for a limited time, too.

The graphics are also amazing. I’m not sure how the game would play on midrange or

low-end Android devices, but it runs smoothly on the Galaxy S III. Renderings are pretty smooth, and the sequences capture the essence of the animated movie down to a T.

Overall, Minion Rush is a solid game. It might not be the most original, but at least it doesn’t feel like a game that was made just for the sake of having a tie-in to the movie. It stands out on its own pretty well, primarily because of the sheer appeal of the minions. It’s enjoyable and challenging enough, and it’s free, so it’s a win-win situation. Try it now and you’ll soon find you’ve spent a few hours playing it.

What I love about this game is the cute Minions and well of course the capacity to play and play and play even if you crash or die every single time. At least you are given so much opportunities to redeem yourself. I think this is a very nice game, with so much improvements from the probably original idea of the temple run. With Minion Rush there are many costumes, you collect bananas and there are power ups that are very useful.

I absolutely agree with this The cute characters have become a huge hit with children and even adults enjoy them. It prevents the game from being like every other endless runner game out there and adds fun elements.
