  • With their odd time signatures, offbeat syncopation's and intellectual lyrics make each song an highly rewarding experience
  • There are tons of different break downs and interludes, and I believe 2 different choruses
  • If you're looking to learn some new words in the English vocabulary, I suggest reading these lyrics as well
  • By far Day of Baphomets is my favorite song off of Amputechture, with Tetragrammaton in a close second

Day of Baphomets is a song by the Mars Volta. It appears as the 7th track off of their 2006 album “Amputechture”. The Mars Volta are noted to be a very avant-garde and experimental band. With their odd time signatures, offbeat syncopation’s and intellectual lyrics make each song an highly rewarding experience. Although it is hard to get into some of their songs I feel “Day of Baphomets” is a good start for any listener unfamiliar with the band.

The song starts off with a nice little percussion groove with maraca mixed in

following a ferocious bass solo. The tempo increases and tension is built until you get to the main riff. The guitars play this repetitious riff for quite some time. When the brass comes in, it is very unexpecting and at first off putting. However the more you listen to the song, the more you except the brass parts and they seem to fit with the song. Some listeners may have qualms with Cedric Bixler-Zavala’s vocals. I at first was one of these people. It is kind of high pitched and whiny sounding,
but in this particular song it is welcoming and just sort of fits. “Day of Baphomets” has a lot going on for it structurally. There are tons of different break downs and interludes, and I believe 2 different choruses. This is a song that is actually kind of exhausting if you are really trying to focus on all the different aspects of it. The song itself is roughly 12 minutes long as well so it is definitely an exhilarating experience keeping track of how drastically the instruments change. It is about as ...

roller coaster as you can get, with ups and downs compared to the overall pacing and tempo of the song.

The lyrics like most Mars Volta lyrics are deciphered based on the listener. I do not believe there is any true final meaning to the song but is open to each listener. If you’re looking to learn some new words in the English vocabulary, I suggest reading these lyrics as well. These guys must go through a thesaurus and all the synonyms while writing lyrics. Overall, I personally think this song has

something to do with religious concepts, specifically dealing with Christianity.

By far “Day of Baphomets” is my favorite song off of Amputechture, with “Tetragrammaton” in a close second. Anyone who has a open mind when it comes to music should give this song a listen. It is a bit faster than most of their songs and also I feel that it isn’t so off putting as far as song structure goes, so it is a nice choice as a first listen for people who think they might be interested in The Mars Volta.

This album is quite a musicial journey. And the sounds, though they maybe extreme at some points, all blend together to make for a continuous stream of consciousness. I am personally a huge fan of The Mars Volta, and this album is a great edition to their discography. The odd time signatures can be very jarring, but they work to convey a strange feeling that I love. Their technical usage of sound is what makes them so unique, and I just love it.
