  • I think that the substance of this music is lacking
  • Some of the songs are so poor that I do not even want to mention them, they feel like total failures and an embarrassment for a band which I consider to be one of my favorite ones
  • Florida is probably the best song on the album
  • People as Places as People has a melody that is very lucky, but, however, this melody does not get developed, it goes on on the same line, repetitive and boring

It might be surprising to say this, but this album would have gotten a higher grade if it was a debut album by a band. But, in comparison to all the previous records that this band has put out, this one looks indeed like a kind of disappointment. Modest Mouse is an Indie band that have developed their own sound, and they sound pretty original, and particularly strong are their guitar lines. I totally love the way in which guitars sound on their records.

On the new albums the guitars sound good, probably in several ways, a little better than they did on the previous albums, due to recording quality and

increasing skills, but, this album has a really big drawback as far as song writing and content are concerned. I think that the substance of this music is lacking. What good is the sound, when the songs do not have good skeletons?

Isaac Brock has been a remarkable vocalist.

He used to deliver really well. His lyrics were so original, and he always had so much character in his voice and persona. I think that on this record he has suffered a kind of a lapse, he has slipped a bit.

He has tried to go too far, and in reality, as it happened, he failed to get anywhere at all. He does not sound natural on this album. He seems to be hard-pushed to generate good ideas.

The thing that made all the previous albums so wonderful was the originality, was the content. All of their previous albums were really inspired. They flourished, they were filled with good ideas.

They sounded so well. They were organic and easy. This is not the case with this album.

It is strained. Some of the songs are so poor that I do not even want to mention them, they feel like total failures and an embarrassment for a band which I consider to be one of my favorite ones. However, some of the songs ...

      are worth saving the criticism.

March into the Sea is a rather energetic song, it sounds pretty emotional, but at the same time it might be going a bit too far with it also. Florida is probably the best song on the album. It has a great sound, memorable vocal lines, but it does have other issues, such as lyrics being rather average, and lacking the quality that they are expected to have.

People as Places as People has a melody that is very lucky, but, however, this melody does not get developed, it goes on on the same line, repetitive and boring. Little Motel is an emotional song that is

recorded rather well, but still there is such a monotonous and uninspired presentation of the melody, without any proper development, that it makes the whole thing pointless overall. And I should probably get back to what I was saying in the beginning.

If it was a debut album, by a new band, everybody would probably be saying: Hey, this is a good band. But, since it is Modest Mouse, the band who have released such albums as their debut, and then The Moon and Antarctica and, of course Good News for People Who Love Bad News, all these three albums are gems, and they just did an average job. They let me, their fan, down.
