Just the mention of Curry gets my mouth watering. The aromatic blend of spices and ingredients bursting with flavor cooked to perfection and served with Rice or Indian flat bread, there is nothing comparable.

The key to making a delicious Chicken Curry lies not only in the preparation method but the spice blend and the ingredients used.

Chicken Curry can be made in many different ways and there are many variations that one can try. I like that there are many different brands to choose from that offers their own special blends.

This review is on MDH Chicken Curry Masala (Spice Blend for Chicken Curry). MDH is one of the oldest spice brands in India and is currently available internationally all over the world through Indian Groceries and Online

      stores.

I bought the pack of 100 gm at the store for S$2.50. The spice blend comes in a sealed pack inside a paper box.

The pack comes with full instruction on how to use it to make curry. As per the box the ingredients of the blend are Coriander, Chillies, Cumin, Turmeric, Fenugreek Leaves, Salt, Black Pepper, Dry Ginger, Mustard, Bay Leaf, Pulse, Clove, Nutmeg, Caraway, Cinnamon, Cardamom Seeds, Mace and Asafoetida.

The cooking instruction provided is as follows: Wash, trim and cut 1 Kg. Chicken into 8 pieces and set aside. Heat 100g oil/ghee in a pan and fry 3 chopped onions till golden. Add 3 chopped tomatoes, 1/2 tspn. Deggi Mirch and stir well. Add 15g. Chicken Masala and salt to taste. Stir fry for 2-3 min.

      • Add Chicken pieces and fry them for 10 min. Add 100g. beaten natural yoghurt, 60ml. water and mix. Reduce to low heat, cover and simmer for 20 min. Prevent it from sticking at bottom. Add 15ml. lemon juice and 2g. Kasoori Methi leaves, stir and serve.

I have followed the recipe a few times and have also tried to make some variations. Although the Chicken Curry turns out delicious. It didn’t have a nice coloring. The spice blends make the curry on the darker less appetizing side.

But, as for the taste it is sharp and spicy. The aroma is strong but pleasant. There is no need to add additional chilli powder as it is hot enough on its own but some turmeric is good to enhance the color.

        It

is definitely a good taste but the spice mix does not really bring out the uniquely chicken flavor. This spice can be used to making any type of curry like rajma beans or even Chick peas.

The Chicken Curry made using the MDH Chicken Curry Masala Spice Blend for Chicken Curry goes well with indian Flat bread and naan bread than with rice.

Even though the MDH Curry Masala is a popular brand it is not my favorite. I much prefer chicken curry masala that has a more pronounced cinammon and nutmeg flavorings. I don’t know why this has Asafoetida in the ingredients list. I have never seen that before and I usually do not use Asafoetida in chicken curry.
