Hostel is a notable entry in the “torture porn” horror genre. This film, along with Saw, in a sense CREATED the “torture porn” genre, a genre that is most notable for having extreme blood and gore. Hostel, however, is not just dumb blood and gore. It is actually a very enjoyable, albeit terrifying film! I had fairly low expectations, but I must say, Hostel surprised me! It may not be the most intelligent horror film you’ve ever seen, but it’ll definitely scare you, and shock you with its

      plentiful guts and eerie storyline!

From the start, Hostel starts off with a bang! It follows a fairly typical storyline of two college kids trying to find an adventure. Two guys go to Europe in search of hot girls and partying, but what they eventually find is a sickening torture ring and human hunting industry.

The entire film truly is shocking, disgusting, and disturbing. I have seen a wide array of horror films, and plenty of controversial films, but Hostel was still able to both shock and disgust me! This is, although it may not sound like it, a good thing. Hostel was able to achieve its goal of being a grotesque horror film. It is disturbing not only because of the consistent blood and gore, but also the entire storyline. The more you watch, the more sickened you become as these innocent people are being brutally tortured.

Many horror films have a sort of “bloody fun” tone to them, but Hostel sincerely lacks that quality. Nothing about Hostel is funny. It is an intensely disturbing film on ...

many different levels, but as a fan of horror, I have to admit that I enjoyed it.

Along with being grotesque and horrifying Hostel, somewhat surprisingly, offers some thought provoking questions. I won’t spoil it for you in this review, but a lot of the film has you reflecting on what causes people to be this evil.

The acting was fairly well done, the direction was great, and the visuals were brutal. I must say the film did take a little while to really take off, but I did not

lose interest. Once it got bloody, it got bloody, and I could not stop watching!

I have to say, I do recommend Hostel if you are a fan of horror. It is a little bit more than just mindless “torture porn” although it did partially coin the phrase. It is a brutal, horrifying thrill ride that is the perfect choice for any horror fanatic. I give it a 7 out of 10 simply because it is an effective, disturbing horror flick. Despite its slow start and few flaws, I enjoyed the film.

I’ve heard of this film but was skeptical at first to take the time to watch it, thinking that it wasn’t going to be all that great. After reading your well written review, I want to watch this movie for myself. Thanks.

You gave a good review on the movie, but after watching it myself years back I can say that I have not enjoyed this movie. half the time i feel grossed out and just sick to the stomach. Maybe I am not a fan of such a kind of movie full of blood and violence. I did took note of the thing that led to the demise of the people here though, is to be careful when you are out travelling.

It draws you in with the unknowing of what will happen and takes you for a ride. The torture aspect of this film is cringing to watch, it makes you disgusted to know that there are real people and real places out there that truly believe in this and act in accordance. There are people who enjoy the real life drama and tragedy of torturing others and making money from it. As twisted as it is that people enjoy doing this to others, I myself am a big horror/gruesome fan, it’s the excitement of knowing how far they can go with the imagination we as humans hold. And it makes you never want to visit a place where true stories have occurred, for the mere fact, they are TRUE Yes, stories do change to make them film appropriate, names and places do change, but the story itself is usually the most original piece of imagination whether fictional or fact.
