  • Whether you're a lover of coming-of-age novels, the so called slice of life anime, or just a lover of jazz I highly recommend this anime to anyone (even if you've never watched an anime before)
  • If you haven't heard of her, she also created the amazing soundtrack for the anime Cowboy Bebop

The animation is wonderful, the story is lively, and when those two main characters start playing jazz I just can’t help but close my eyes and smile. The anime Sakamichi no Apollon (also known as Kids on the Slope in English) truly is a masterpiece. I am a big fan of coming-of-age stories such as The Catcher in the Rye by J.

      D. Salinger and The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath.

That’s why I was so excited that there was going to be anime, or Japanese animation, for this

genre. Whether you’re a lover of coming-of-age novels, the so called “slice of life” anime, or just a lover of jazz I highly recommend this anime to anyone (even if you’ve never watched an anime before).

The pacing of the plot is just right, the characters are pretty well detailed personality wise, and best of all the music is arranged by genius composer, Yoko Kanno! If you haven’t heard of her, she also created the amazing soundtrack for the anime Cowboy Bebop.

By now you’re probably (hopefully) wondering what ...

      • this anime is about or why you should even take the time to watch it.

Well, for starters, Kids on the Slope takes place in 1960s Japan. The main protagonist, Kaoru, is bored with life- he finds himself in a repeating cycle that has no meeting.

Then one day he meets another guy that messes up his pace, Sentarou. Together, they form a jazz group that makes everyday fulfilling.

While this brief description may sound a bit mundane, the anime in actuality is so much more. The

only complaint I have was the ending (the last episode), it felt a bit too “rushed.

” But then again, it could have been worse. Anyways, Kids on the Slope only consists of 12 episodes.

However, I promise you, each episode will keep you wanting more. You can watch this anime online on various sites if you just google it’s Japanese name (Sakamichi no Apollon).

Oh, that’s another thing- the anime is in only available in Japanese since it’s fairly new, but English subtitles are widely available. Well, happy watching!
