Home Owners Bargain Outlet (aka: HOBO) carries a plethora of different items for the home at steeply discounted prices but don’t be deceived by the name. You do not have to be a home owner to find items you will need at this store. The store is much like a Marshall’s or TJ Maxx store but for housewares. You can get an entire variety of items at the store including: flooring, furniture, rugs, garden tools and decorations, cabinetry, bathroom fixtures, sinks and accessories, paint, lighting and tools.

The store is not very attractive. It has bare concrete floors, unorganized aisles and not many members of staff around to answer questions or get help. However, this leads to upfront price savings that are immediately passed on to the customer. If you’re looking for a full service store, you will need to be prepared to spend much more money and go to a design center specializing in kitchen and bath projects. However, if you’re looking for necessities or are a do it yourselfer remodeling your own home this store will have exactly what you need at a great price.

      My fiance and

I have had a lot of luck here. We most recently purchased ceramic tile for our kitchen for $2.30 per tile and the whole flooring bill came to less than $350. We compared this price to the $9 per tile at a specialty tile shop where we found similar natural stone flooring which would also require much more upkeep over time. The tile shop also did not provide installation, so we were not getting any extra benefit from buying the tile from them except that the more expensive tile was much nicer in appearance. Since we would mostly be walking on the tile and probably dropping things on it, we decided to go with the less expensive tile offered at HOBO. We also found a very nice stainless steel garbage can at HOBO for $30. Compared to $75 or more at department stores or Bed, Bath and Beyond we knew we found a bargain. The garbage can was larger than the $40 Home brand can I purchased at Target and had a piston action lid that closes slowly and doesn’t make any noise unlike my Target can.

      We also ...

      • purchased our patio furniture at HOBO for about $250 which included a large glass top table, 6 chairs, umbrella and stand. This is a huge savings compared to even what Lowe’s or Home Depot which costs over $300, which of course depends on the quality of the furniture line you choose. Our set did not need separate cushions since the fabric of the chairs was woven material designed to resist weather but is still comfortable enough to sit on alone. It also meant it was much easier to clean than a set with cushions since we only had to use a hose and wash it off at the beginning of summer.

Finally, we purchased a beautiful real marble dining room table with 6 chairs for $600. I love the high end look of the marble and the rich mahogany color of the table and leather chairs. The cost savings for the table came in the form of installation. The set came with the table top and legs separate so we did have to put together the chairs and table, and the table is quite heavy due to the thick 2”

marble top. However, the table is very beautiful and we get tons of compliments on it. It looks like a table set that would cost over $1,000.

One drawback to purchasing items through HOBO, besides needing to be able to put items together, is that they do not offer delivery. We were able to easily transport the ceramic tile and garbage can in my fiance’s car in one visit, but when we purchased the patio furniture and dining room set we did have to rent a small truck to transport them. If you plan to purchase large items you may want to ask a friend with a truck in advance to provide transportation, otherwise you may need to figure in the cost of a truck rental for a few hours into the overall cost savings.

If you are handy and are willing to put together furniture or install and remodel on your own you will love HOBO. We plan to head back to purchase a new bistro sized dinette set for our newly remodeled kitchen and will also look at home decor and accessories to accent the kitchen and tie everything together.
