I would say that a city like Washington DC cannot be covered in just one trip. You will feel that during your trip; still there are some ‘must see’ things which need to be covered. So, I am going to tell you about the traditional attractions as well as some ultra-modern fun-filled places in the city!

      A) Traditional architecture and monuments:

      1. Go for the Smithsonian

Begin your trip at the Smithsonian Institution Building and pick up a map as well as information about all the museums. Smithsonian covers a vast range of subjects starting from art to space exploration. Chalk out to visit those first which you are most interested in rather going for everything at once.

If you get tired seeing the museums, relax a bit by watching an IMAX movie at the Natural History Museum or the National Air and Space Museum.

      2. Tour the Three Houses of Government

See three very important buildings — the White House, U.S. Capitol Building, and the U.S. Supreme Court. These buildings symbolize the division of power within U.S democratic government. Plan in advance as some tours must be scheduled through your Congressional Representative prior to this visit.

      3. Check for National Monuments and Memorials:

This city has some spectacular national monuments! The special one is the Basilica of the National shrine. Built in 1959, it is the

tallest (329 feet) building in Washington DC. Another one is Lincoln Memorial, built in honor of the former president Abraham Lincoln.

The best time to see these monuments is at night when they are illuminated. The other reason being parking is easier at this time. If you want to visit in the daylight, then prefer to take a tour bus. You will get all the information from the park ranger and you will be able to avoid the congested city traffic.

      4. Don’t miss Thomas Jefferson Building, Library of Congress:

It is one of the architectural geniuses in this city and also a truly great treasure of human knowledge in the world. The Library of Congress Jefferson Building should be on the top of your list.

      B) Other fun-filled attractions:

      1. Take a Walk in the most ‘walkable’ city:

You will be interested to know that Washington DC was voted the most walkable city in the United States in a survey conducted in 2007. Experience it yourself.

Visit Georgetown by walking and see the capital’s historic waterfront. This area is also a shopper’s paradise and the streets are lined with good restaurants put up by people from across the world. Do some shopping and enjoy a delicious meal at any of the local restaurants.

Also, don’t forget to walk through the old Town of Alexandria. This town ...

      • is just over the Potomac River from Washington, DC. Take a look at the colonial houses, churches, and museums and you can shop for antiques.

        2. Explore the Mount Vernon:

It is another ‘must see’. Recently a new museum and education center have been, which makes the Mount Vernon a full day trip. Check the art galleries and theaters, visit the 500-acre estate of George Washington, scout the 14-room mansion which is beautifully furnished with objects dating back to the 1740’s. This estate is located in Northern Virginia, just minutes away from the Washington, DC.

        3. Hike at the Great Falls Park:

Have a picnic and enjoy great scenery of the Potomac River at this 800 acre park. It is just 14 miles from the Washington DC.

        4. Stopover at Rock Creek Park:

Rock Creek Park is the perfect blend of nature and history right at the heart of the nation’s capital. It covers over 1,700 acres and includes trails for hiking, bicycling and horseback riding, and also many historic sites such as the Old Stone House and Pierce Mill.

        5. Enjoy a Bike ride along the C & O Canal

This is a wonderful bike trails. Just jump on a bicycle and you’ll quickly relieve yourself from hectic city life. It can be a great family trip exploring the historic C & O Canal.

        6. Have fun viewing a

show or concert at the Kennedy Center:

Entertain yourself witnessing live theatrical productions at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. They are truly amazing! Buy tickets in advance to see a variety of performances ranging from musicals to concerts by the National Symphony. You can also see a free show at the Millennium Stage, which is equally entertaining.

        7. DuPont Circle:

You will easily call it the trendiest residential neighborhoods in Washington, DC. Just walk down the streets lined up with trees and take a look at the historic architecture, stop by the Phillips Collection, which has one of the best art collections or browse for an hour at Kramerbooks & Afterwords Café.

        8. Eastern Market:

Eastern Market has been a public market for over a century and a place to get together for the Capitol Hill residents. During early spring through late fall, the market bustles with farmers, artisans and artists selling their stuff. There is also a weekly street festival, which people cherish a lot.

Best time to visit Washington DC: You can witness the true color and beauty of Washington DC during Spring and autumn. These two seasons are the best times of year here. Even September and October are pretty comfortable for exploring this city.
