“Jerry Was a Race Car Driver” happens to be one of the more popular Primus songs. This song shows up on their 1991 album “Sailing the Seas of Cheese” as track number 5. Although it isn’t technically Primus first single ever (that goes to their song John the Fisherman) it happens to be their first single on a major record label.

The song starts up with an engine motor being fired up, followed by the peculiar sound of Les Claypool’s bass. Les is well known for playing his bass in a slap style, and that’s no different on this song. Because it is

played so high up on the frets, it has an unusual “pop” noise to it. Not only does frontman Les Claypool play bass but he is also the lead singer. He has a very odd nasally voice and is pretty goofy for the most part. This doesn’t make “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver” a bad song in fact the instruments are fantastic. Larry LaLonde plays guitar, both rhythm and lead considering it’s a 3 man group. In my opinion, LaLonde has always been one of the most underrated guitar players in the later half of the 20th century. Although for the most part, LaLonde plays a somewhat reverse role where the guitar actually supports the bass, he does have his parts to shine throughout Primus long catalog of songs. In “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver” LaLonde busts out an amazing guitar solo, in which many has shown up on numerous “Best Guitar Solo” lists on the internet. Tim “Herb” Alexander does the drumming on this song. His drumming is tight and keeps the song flowing. I especially like the double bass triplets he does throughout the song at various speeds.

“Jerry Was a Race Car Driver” is a song about well… Jerry who was ...

a race car driver. The first verse pretty much signifies that Jerry was a decent race car driver, but never did win any races. The second verse cuts from the first verse entirely and is about a firefighter named Captain Pierce, who ends up retiring. It’s kind of odd that they even added that verse into the song. The third and final verse follows after the awesome guitar solo. This verse goes back to Jerry who ended up crashing his car into a telephone poll after driving while intoxicated. I assume he died, thus the title of the song “Jerry WAS a Race
      Car Driver”.

This is a very good song, and I admit is the song that got me interested in listening to Primus. The first time I heard this song was when I was a teenager and I played “Tony Hawk Pro Skater” for the first time on Playstation. Given, I didn’t really care for the rest of the songs on the game, this was the only song I would listen to. This song single handedly brought the attention to Primus and if you like this song, there are more gems to be discovered by the band. I totally recommend checking this song out, if you haven’t already.
