  • I believe the owner worked the sales floor along with the associates and did a great job greeting and assisting you with looking for a dress for special occasions
  • I had luck a time or two but the sales associates would sometimes bring over recommendations that were way too casual and totally inappropriate for a wedding, in my opinion
  • The dress was just that pretty and complemented my figure so I decided I would just go ahead and purchase it on the off chance I’d find an appropriate time to wear it
  • I love purses and tend to get bored of mine easily, so I’m on the hunt for new ones every few months
  • I highly recommend checking out Fred if you’re looking for a cute casual dress or something more elegant for a wedding

Fred is a boutique located in downtown Milwaukee that offers affordable clothing and accessories. The store has drastically changed in the last few years. The store used to look crammed with racks of clothing set very closely together and lots of cheaper looking things for sale. I believe the owner worked the sales floor along with the associates and did a great job greeting and assisting you with looking for a dress for special occasions. I had shopped there a few times about 6 years ago for dresses I wanted to wear to weddings. I had luck a time or two but the sales associates would sometimes bring over recommendations that were way too casual and totally inappropriate for a wedding, in my opinion.

I’d moved away from the area and hadn’t been back for about 5 years but I recently went back to the store a few months ago. I was pleasantly surprised at the changes that the store had gone through. The store had previously been one floor and now it has

a second level with a beautiful staircase leading up to the other level. It no longer looked crammed full of clothes. In fact, it has a very open and airy feel now. The decor has vastly improved as well. What previously was slightly barren and drab is colorful and looks more like a typical downtown boutique. Downstairs seems to house more accessories and most of the clothes are located upstairs.

The clothing is still affordably priced and the sales associates are knowledgeable and helpful without being pushy. I purchased a beautiful dress that would be suitable for a wedding a few months ago even though I had no upcoming plans to attend one. The dress was just that pretty and complemented my figure so I decided I would just go ahead and purchase it on the off chance I’d find an appropriate time to wear it. It turns out the dress worked perfectly for a higher end restaurant I visited while on vacation in Savannah. The quality of the dress was also very nice. While ...

      • it was a bit more than I’d usually spend at around $75, it looked like it was worth much more. I felt very pretty and elegant in it.

I also like that the Fred boutique website has been expanded to show the inventory online. While I would probably not purchase anything online since I work so close to the store, I would still like to be able to browse and see if anything catches my eye that I’d like to view in person or try on. However, last time I checked the website it appeared to be down since no clothing items would appear under any categories.

My only complaint is that the store seemed to have gone from one extreme to the other. Where there were once stacks and rows of clothing for sale, now the store seems a bit barren. Maybe it’s due to the extra space that was obtained through expanding to the second level, but it seemed as though it took my friend and I about 20 minutes to view

the entire inventory. She didn’t find anything she liked or could find an occasion to wear since the store seems to carry dresses almost exclusively now. The store always seemed to have more dresses than tops, pants or skirts but the inventory of everything else has decreased drastically. I also wish they carried more bags. I love purses and tend to get bored of mine easily, so I’m on the hunt for new ones every few months. The last time my friend and I were there they had very pretty bags but only a handful available for purchase. I wish they would expand their inventory a bit, but what they do have is very nicely priced and good quality.

Overall I give Fred Boutique 8 out of 10 since they are a bit tough to find parking for and I wish they would carry more tops and purses like they used to. I highly recommend checking out Fred if you’re looking for a cute casual dress or something more elegant for a wedding. You will not be disappointed.
