IPCop is a Linux based Firewall solution aimed for home and small office environments. It really is more than just a firewall, it’s a complete router distribution. It comes with DHCP, DNS and proxy servers and it can also be used to create virtual private networks. The first time I ever used it was five months ago when I was in the need for implementing a proxy to give Internet access to our network users at work and that was just as easy as installing it to a PC and configure it through a web interface.

      I have found IPCop very

easy to install and configure. Current version is 2.0.3 and the image of the installer weights just 68 MB. Installing it is as easy as burning the image to a CD (or copying to a USB drive) and booting from there. All you need is to have at least two network cards, one that will be connected to the local network and another to connect to the Internet. The installation process is pretty straightforward and it takes about 15 minutes (although this would depend on how powerful is the PC). To do the configuration process it has a web interface ...

      • that is very intuitive, at least that’s what I have found with the parts I use more, the proxy server and the firewall.

A good thing about IPCop is that it can be installed on any PC. I’ve installed it on a computer from 2000 with just 256 MB of RAM and a hard drive of 8 GB in an environment of more than a hundred users and it had never encountered any trouble handling the work load. Another great thing is that it is possible to add features to IPCop by installing plug-ins. I have installed a plug-in named Cop+

that adds a content filter to easily restrict access to certain web pages like social networks and chat sites (that means no more Facebook or Twitter for my fellow co-workers, after all they shouldn’t be visiting those sites at work).

IPCop is a really great Firewall solution. It is easy to use and can improve the security of any network at no cost. It also can be enhanced by installing third party plug-ins, the only drawback is that right now there aren’t many plug-ins available for the latest version, as most of the plug-ins are for a very old 1.4 release.
