Critique Circle is one of several websites I have visited in the past year or so in an attempt to find some decent feedback for my short stories. While there are many useful writing websites online, I feel that this is among the most helpful I have found so far.

What makes Critique Circle so helpful for me is the kindness and support offered by its members. While the site is mainly used for giving and receiving critiques, there is also an active forum and a strong community aspect to the site

as a whole. The forum includes threads for discussions about writing, listings of writing competitions and even a thread in which members help one another with the research process. The critiques I have received on the five stories I’ve posted on this site so far have been both costructive and highly encouraging. Many of the members are published writers, meaning that the feedback received is of a very high quality.

Another very appealing aspect of Critique Circle is that posted work is visible only to other members. This means that writers who ...

      • would otherwise lose first publication rights to their work by self-publishing online on sites which are visible to the public are able to retain all rights to their stories by posting only on this site.

One major downside to using Critique Circle is that it often takes a long time to receive feedback on your work. When a story is submitted to the site, it enters into a queue of stories waiting to be reviewed. A certain number of stories are put “in review” every week, meaning that they become visible to

members and can be critiqued during and after that week. It can take several weeks, sometimes up to a month, before a particular story rises to the top of the queue and is put “in review.” In contrast, other writing websites such as reviewfuse.com offer almost instant feedback.

This website may also seem somewhat intimidating to new writers who have little experience with the critique process, as the criticism received can occasionally be quite harsh. That said, I have yet to find another website that offers such honest and high quality feedback.
