  • I am a huge fan of the NordicWare brand so didn't imagine it would be anything less than an excellent buy, unfortunately it has proved to be nothing but a gimmick and after four uses I have relegated it to the kitchen cupboard where I suspect it will remain forever
  • I don't think this works very well, if at all
  • Actually I think the entire gadget is a waste of time and money, it barely shaves any time at all off the time it takes to bake a potato and to be honest I'm not impressed with the appearance or finish of the potatoes at all
  • The fact that I paid $12 for this is quite annoying, it's not that it's a huge amount of money to waste but considering how much appeal the NordicWare brand have I can't help feeling a little cheated

As a family we eat a lot of baked potatoes, so when I saw this gadget designed to speed up the baking process I had to buy it. I am a huge fan of the NordicWare brand so didn’t imagine it would be anything less than an excellent buy, unfortunately it has proved to be nothing but a gimmick and after four uses I have relegated it to the kitchen cupboard where I suspect it will remain forever.

Made of cast aluminum, it’s a fairly lightweight item to use. The idea is that you press a potato down onto one of the prongs and place the whole thing into the oven to bake. The Potato Baker holds four potatoes; I’ve found the size of the potato is

important as if you use ones that are too small the prongs will cover too much of the base of the potato and cause it to split during cooking, using potatoes that are too large means they may touch and this means they won’t cook properly at the ends.

The prongs are sharp enough to allow you to push it smoothly into the raw potato, and the gadget has enough weight once the potatoes are attached that it sits steadily on the shelf of the oven with no wobbling or teetering every time I open and close the oven door.  The prongs supposedly force hot air up into the potato, meaning it cooks quicker as the heat is being conducted both through the outside and the inside ...

      • of it.

I don’t think this works very well, if at all. Actually I think the entire gadget is a waste of time and money, it barely shaves any time at all off the time it takes to bake a potato and to be honest I’m not impressed with the appearance or finish of the potatoes at all. Something about using this item causes the skin to become very wrinkly and the actual flesh of the potato to sink in on itself, much like happens when you ‘bake’ one in the microwave.  This isn’t what I want, if it was I’d zap my spud in the microwave in less than five minutes not wait for two hours!  I want fluffy potato and a crispy skin - and

the fact that NordicWare claim the Baker will give a uniformly crisp skin isn’t true, surprising me really as NordicWare are usually so honest with their descriptions.

The fact that I paid $12 for this is quite annoying, it’s not that it’s a huge amount of money to waste but considering how much appeal the NordicWare brand have I can’t help feeling a little cheated. It’s high quality and substantial in feel, but simply doesn’t work - the potatoes I bake without the use of this gadget come out better and honestly the Potato Baker barely saves any time anyway, you’re much better off to simply stick your potatoes in the oven as normal.  Don’t bother with this - and as a lover of NordicWare I’ve surprised myself saying that!
