  • To me personally, I think it is a song about reaching rock bottom and all hope is lost
  • Either way, Dying Days is definitely a gem, and it's very unfortunate that it was released on their last album before they disbanded

Dying Days is a song by The Screaming Trees. This song can be found on their album “Dust” and their greatest hits album. I find it kind of ironic that the Screaming Trees have a greatest hits album because they really seem to be an underrated band. Nevertheless I find this track to be suitable for such an album because it is quite honestly superb.

Dying Days starts with a simple D C G F chord progression on a acoustic guitar which is

accompanied by another acoustic guitar soon after. At the 10 second mark, Mark Lanegan’s distinct raspy vocals are introduced into the song. After the first verse, which will later become the chorus, the drums and distortion guitars kick in along with some organs ironically. The inclusion of organs may sound odd, but it fits quite well. Dying Days has a very simple pattern which makes you feel like you’re sinking. You can feel the pain and misery in Lanegans voice as he ...

      • forces each lyric out of his mouth. It is a very powerful song. Mike McCready the lead guitarist for Pearl Jam makes a guest appearance in this song and contributes a very well put together guitar solo. I can only think about how many strings McCready broke while doing some of the bends in this song.

Dying Days is a powerful song with some deep lyrics. To me personally, I think it is a song about reaching rock bottom and all hope

is lost. The last lyric of the song (before it goes back to the chorus) is “waiting for the sunshine” which seems to contradict the entire song. Whether they meant that to be ironic or maybe they meant that things can only get better once you totally reached rock bottom, I don’t know. I’d like to think it is the latter. Either way, Dying Days is definitely a gem, and it’s very unfortunate that it was released on their last album before they disbanded.
