  • The only other thing to mention is the fact that the easiest way to turn the Cactus Kabob skewer is to use a set of cooking tongs as once full of food they do get heavy, it's more of an issue this time around as struggling to flip a top-heavy skewer isn't ideal over a hot barbecue - but by the same token they need to be heavy to work properly so you really can't hold that against the skewer
  • I paid $10 for a set of two skewers, this was on some kind of promotion however so the current cost may be higher

I am a huge fan of the NordicWare brand and over recent years have been replacing a lot of my cookware with their products, my most recent acquisition being a set of these Cactus Kabob Skewers for the barbecue.

They’re an excellent twist on a traditional barbecue skewer, each one holding the equivalent of three single skewers. It’s designed to look like a kind of elongated pitchfork, with the three prongs being arranged in a quirky mismatched way.  The flattened ‘knob’ at the end is useful for picking up the skewer to eat your food, although watch out for burned fingers as it gets very hot when on the barbecue (obviously) and takes a longer

time than you’d think to cool down.

The clever design of the skewer has flattened the actual prongs to give a better grip of the food, things stay skewered in one position when you’re using the Cactus Kabob as the food doesn’t spin round as it does on a more traditional skewer. This really does make all the difference, particularly when barbecuing items such as tomatoes or mushrooms as the shape of these means it can be a nightmare turning the skewer to ensure all areas are cooked - it’s extra important when cooking meat on the skewer as it’s so important to cook this thoroughly that you simply cannot afford for a chunk of beef or a prawn to spin around and risk remaining uncooked on one side.

Because of the fact that there are three prongs, it’s fiddly to eat off the middle one. When eating from the Cactus Kabob skewer I tend to slide the food off with my fingers, otherwise I get sauce on my face or end up stabbing myself with one of the prongs. It’s actually a fairly heavy implement to eat from too, so holding it at mouth level for any period of time is a nuisance - it’s much easier to use your fingers or grab a sweetcorn fork to eat the goodies with.

It’s obviously extremely high quality;  I’ve been using mine ...

for a while now and there are no signs of burning or charring (although the food has been several times!), the prongs are as sharp and straight as ever and even the weight of the skewer screams quality. I grease mine lightly before every use, this probably isn’t necessary but it means that food residue and fatty deposits are easily washed up at the end of the evening - if cooking with vegetables only you can literally rinse the deposits away, with meat and seafood a detergent clean is obviously necessary.  It’s dishwasher safe, but I really don’t see the point in loading such an easy to clean item!

The only other thing to mention is

I paid $10 for a set of two skewers, this was on some kind of promotion however so the current cost may be higher.  This, in my opinion, is a reasonable price for such a high quality and useful item - I’ll definitely buy again.
