A wonderful local place to appreciate food and art, Soho South Cafe is a great place to relax, have lunch and enjoy the charm of downtown Savannah.

Located on Liberty Street, this cafe only offers off-street parking, so be sure to bring quarters - you don’t want the meter maids to give you a ticket! There is an adjoining lot, but it’s not for Soho South Cafe patrons, so be careful not to park there! Other than the parking situation, the location is absolutely perfect. They have a few little outdoor tables, perfect for sitting outside and soaking up the beautiful Savannah atmosphere, complete with great big oak trees and romantically draping Spanish moss.

The interior is an eclectic jumble of artwork and mismatched furniture. They have high ceilings that adds to the odd charm of

this place, and the small bar area in the back is a great place to sit and enjoy your food when the restaurant is quite busy. Although some of the seats aren’t the most comfortable, the look of the furniture really adds to the charm of the place.

This restaurant specializes in lunch fare, so it’s important to remember the short window of opportunity you have for dining here: they’re only open from 11am to 4pm; on Sunday, they serve brunch instead of their typical lunch menu. Despite the short hours, they seem to do a fantastic business, probably because of their great food. You can check out the hours (if they change) along with the menu at their website: http://www.sohosouthcafe.com

The menu is mostly sandwiches and salads that are full of great flavors. A lot ...

      • of the items are classics (like grilled cheese with tomato bisque and a Cuban panini,) but they are all done with very fresh and flavorful ingredients. They also seem to add their own little flair on many of these traditional items that give it an extra kick of taste making it superb. Vegetarians will delight in the salad selection as well as my personal favorite, the Grilled Portabella sandwich. It’s the best portabella sandwich I’ve ever had: big slices of portabella with roasted red peppers, caramelized onions, melted brie, wilted spinach and a pesto aioli on a toasted kaiser bun. It comes with a side, and it’s quite large - I often take half of the sandwich home!

In addition to some creative takes on classic salads and sandwiches, they offer a soup of the

day, a quiche of the day, and some fantastic homemade desserts. They also have some great deli selections that are available for purchase in their deli case. The average price is about $8-12 without drinks, but as I mentioned, the sandwiches come with a side and the portions are pretty large. Regardless, the food is fantastic and the atmosphere is just really fun for having lunch with friends. My only critique would be that the service is sometimes slow because they get very busy, and it’s sometimes confusing whether you should pay the waiter or go up to the register. The staff are generally pretty friendly, though, and the wait isn’t terrible.

Overall, one of the best lunch spots Savannah has to offer. Beautiful location and great food. I love taking people here for lunch.
