  • We like to have a family movie night once a week and I used to buy popcorn, the problem being not only the fat content of store-bought popcorn but also the cost involved as it's so expensive at the moment
  • I decided to invest in this NordicWare Microwave Popcorn Popper which I bought from Amazon for $10.50 - equating to just three weeks worth of ready made popcorn
  • The booklet that comes with the Popcorn Popper tells you that a microwave will take 3 - 5 minutes to pop all the kernels, mine takes a few seconds over the three minute mark so I'd recommend you keep a close eye on your popcorn for the first couple of uses until you've worked out the optimum popping time for your microwave

We like to have a family movie night once a week and I used to buy popcorn, the problem being not only the fat content of store-bought popcorn but also the cost involved as it’s so expensive at the moment. I decided to invest in this NordicWare Microwave Popcorn Popper which I bought from Amazon for $10.50 - equating to just three weeks worth of ready made popcorn.

It’s incredibly easy to use; you just put your popcorn kernels into the base, place the lid on top and microwave. The booklet that comes with the Popcorn Popper tells you that a microwave will take 3 - 5 minutes to pop all the kernels, mine takes a

few seconds over the three minute mark so I’d recommend you keep a close eye on your popcorn for the first couple of uses until you’ve worked out the optimum popping time for your microwave.

This Popcorn Popper uses the hot air method to pop the kernels so you don’t need to add extra fat.  After popping has finished you can add butter if you want to, but I personally think the finished popcorn is excellent as it comes so rarely add anything unless one of the kids fancies something ‘different’.

The kernels begin popping within twenty seconds of switching the microwave on, and from then on it’s a very speedy (and noisy!) process. The kernels can ...

      • burn easily so watch out for this, once the first one burns you’ll find lots of them will follow and very quickly - while this doesn’t damage the Popper, it can make cleaning a little more awkward as the burnt kernels leave a stubborn black/brown stain which takes a session with a scouring pad to remove.  The base of the Popcorn Popper is also oven and dishwasher safe, although I can’t personally think why you’d need to put it in the oven - having it suitable for the dishwasher is useful, even though I find hand washing it is quick and easy enough.

This Popper will hold 12 cups of popped corn, which equates to roughly

a cup of kernels. It’s possible to pop less, but this obviously affects the popping time so you’d need to keep a closer eye on your microwave if you choose to use less than the recommended amount. It slots easily into my cupboard for storage and has not become discoloured or warped even after months of regular use, the base and lid both stay cool after being microwaved although you need to be careful as sometimes steam will collect between the pieces of popped corn.

I completely recommend this NordicWare Microwave Popcorn Popper as an alternative to fatty, sugary store-bought bags of popcorn and also think it’s a much better buy than those ineffective electric popcorn poppers.
