There are valid reasons to take a drive on this highway in western Nevada. I refer to the stretch of highway from Lathrop Wells (which is located about 70 miles north of Las Vegas) to Death Valley Junction, approximately a half-hour drive. For one thing, truck traffic is prohibited on this stretch of highway, which makes the two lane road considerably safer and quieter than the other two-laners around.

I recommend this easy drive to anyone who wishes to relax - not having to pay undue attention to the rigours of the drive itself - and think, or engage in conversation with a passenger. Along

the way, there are a few diversions.

This begins with Lathrop Wells itself, which has a nice and affordable restaurant in one of the two fuel facilities. So you can have a very reasonable meal, purchase thirst-quenchers, and begin your relaxing drive towards the California state line.

Fifteen minutes down the straight highway on your right will be the Longstreet Casino (60 rooms, swimming pool, a small herd of dairy animals to pet and observe, and another decent restaurant, a couple dollars more than Lathrop Wells). A right turn a few minutes before the casino, as a diversion, will take you through the Amargosa Valley ...

      • farming and dairy facilities.

There is a country store there. There are no tourist facilities at Death Valley Junction other than a small motel.

Your options at this point are either north or south. You may return to Las Vegas the way you came, or by two small highways driving south (see a map - it’s easy) which return you to Highway 95 near Indian Springs.

This route offers a very scenic view of the Spring Mountains’ north face (best in winter and spring snow). If you were to choose this route from Las Vegas, it would constitute - not including the various stops

nor the diversionary drive through Amargosa - about a three-hour drive.

There are hot springs in Ash Meadows, which is easily identifiable on a map as a left turn off Highway 373 before reaching the California state line. There are three options on the way to Lathrop Wells or on the return drive down Highway 95 for driving up to the 7,000 - 8500 - ft.

level in the Spring Mountains (Kyle Cannyon, Lee Canyon, Cold Creek). Even in summer, the temps are very noticeably milder at these higher elevations.

You’ll find that your options on this route will provide a much-appreciated alternative to the city experience.
